Interesting that North, Port, South and West are essentially giving up on a premiership in 2011

Six??

Five I know. Who is the other?

North Adelaide United :)

Really. Read that they were in. When did they pull out?

Sorry, behind the times, last I read they couldn't be contacted......phone must be back on hook.....

Clubs were alwats going to backflip once the other said yes. Especially once Port got in.

I think you may be a bit behind with the news, hereselmo1. Maybe refer the SANfl press release or Adelaide now article.

Give it time.

Yes, I think you're right. As soon as any of the non participants believe they're not a realistic SANFL premiership chance, they'd probably seek to play.

Of course by then hopefully the SANFL commission would have negotiated that participation doesn't financially cost a club. Also, maybe they would know if the clubs they represent, can support their sponsors, those that have supported these teams, kept them alive. Chandler, said they hadn't even worked this out yet? P*** weak.

Make from it what you will, the top 5 teams from last year have rejected it on the basis that it would effect their 2011 premiership claims however the bottom 4 clubs are ready to sign. Not a discussion point?

At least it makes a change from reading posts about how bad the SANFL standard is.

Perhaps the top 5 clubs (in 2010) are just a bit too precious over this.

Not sure why its automatically assumed that Central, Norwood, Eagles and Glenelg are going to be top sides in 2011? Bar Central the other three are all starting out having lost a number of players from their 2010 lists and have plenty of work to do to keep it ticking over.

You seem to be assuming that the other 4 teams accept that it will affect their premiership claims but don't care. Have you considered the possibility that the other 4 teams DON'T believe it would effect their 2011 premiership claims?
There's no guarantee they will play 3 or 4 games. If they lose their first game they're knocked out. Do you think they'd believe that would affect their premiership claims?
Yeah it's a discussion point, but when you phrase it as an unfounded bald statement of fact, it equates to a troll.

Personally I think different clubs are at different stages.

I hope this doesn't get taken the wrong way, but South, Westies and North are experiencing some of the longest premiership droughts currently .. The opportunity to win silverware of any sort is perhaps the biggest driving force, along with the exposure they would receive in taking it out (or possibly even without winning the whole thing) .. You also have two of the 3 most financial clubs among that group, so for them the financial aspect probably isn't of concern.

For the Magpies, well they are one Port now and have healthy numbers of supporters all across the country .. They are the biggest footy brand name to have emanated from this state and they probably have a lot of dormant supporters that could be stirred by this.

All 4 of those clubs start with the same wins and losses on the board in the 2011 SANFL season, so it doesn't suggest they think they can't win a premiership at all, thats nonsense.

The top 5 clubs of last season perhaps feel they aren't far away and have their focus set on just the one goal, the one they deem most important, and there's nothing wrong with that either.

I think people read too much into clubs decisions to participate or not.

Norwood have declined and I support my club's decision, but I'll also support whichever SA clubs have a crack at it.

Why did 4 clubs put out a joint press release, and Glenelg put their own one out?

Notwithstanding, I think the Bays make some fair points to their supporters.

I caught a bit of Chandler on 5AA tonight and he unsuccessfully tried to mask his displeasure and no SANFL top 3 or even any finalists making it.

As per CP above, not only are South and North comfortably financial, I imagine they (and West or South) would see this comp as also being an opportunity to get exposure to potential recruits of the future.

Chandler said all clubs will get cleanskin apparel, provided by the AFL. The sponsorship arrangements are clearly still to be determined.

Quite simply, there is minimal financial benefit in participating in the competition. If a side were to win it, they would win $40000 for playing 4 games - or $10000 per game.

I'm not sure what the standard match payment for SANFL league level is, but to break even, match payments need to be less than $480 per player per game - and this isn't even taking into account coaching and support staff. If you don't win the competition I'm guessing the average will be even less.

Sure I'm disappointed from a football point of view that my club didn't participate but can completely understand why, and if I was in a position to make the decision I would have done the same.

I would suggest that the reasons for Glenelg declining the invitation were somewhat different to the other four clubs.

I think many of you have missed the point.
It is an insult to offer the WINNER of the competition $40,000.
Why would you bother ? Why would you risk injury and forgo valuable rest time for players for such a pathetic prize ?

Dont insult our League !!!!!!!!
I am disgusted the SANFL agreed to support the concept and did not represent the interests of its clubs. Puppets !
