The question isn't why Haren's gone, but why anyone else who's SANFL league standard would stay unless their name is Steve Summerton.

Playing SANFL reserves in a club's 3rd-tier side, with promotion to the club's 2nds (and re-relegation back to its 3rds) based more on the number of injuries in the AFL squad then the merits of their form, on significantly less coin than they could be getting anywhere else (going out on a limb and presuming that Port are following the rules), ain't exactly selling it. What happened with Biemans in the finals and then Bruggemann in the grand final was like a big advertisement: 'Hey, SANFL players! Go somewhere else!'

I'm hearing Bruggerman to Sturt. Why wouldn't he after the way he was treated toward the end of this year.

Big pickup for Sturt.

Magpies with another player out. Coming back to the pack a bit it would appear.

Staying at Port.

Gees, he'd be pushing 40 !!!

Nah, just kidding. Yves was one of the fittest blokes going around at the club, in his time...

Would be good for some of the young key defenders coming through. Be liking a playing assistant coach out there...

ASERI Raikiwasa has told Port Adelaide he will pursue a new opportunity in League football away from Alberton in 2015.

Raikiwasa, 21, was the first player to join Port Adelaide’s contracted player pool at the end of 2013 when the club integrated its AFL and SANFL football operations.

Along with Sam Gray, who was eventually AFL-listed by the club during the last AFL Rookie Draft, Raikiwasa was one of a group of SANFL players to remain with the club in the state league.

But the key defender will play his football further up Port Road at Woodville Oval, with Port Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens finalising a transfer today.

Raikiwasa debuted with Port Adelaide in 2012 and has since played 33 League games over two years, but was unable to crack the senior Magpies outfit last season.

‘Bobby’ is the second player to leave the club’s contract list in as many weeks, but Port Adelaide’s SANFL Football Manager Scott Peters is confident most of last season’s group will stay in black and white in 2015.

“Bobby’s chosen to look for other opportunities in the SANFL and we wish him all the best with those,” Peters told portadelaidefc.com.au.

“It’s disappointing when you lose or let go of any player, but we’re hopefully going to sign most of our players to new deals for next year soon.

“We’re pretty confident we’ll keep most of that list together.”

Port Adelaide’s SANFL Academy commenced training last week.

Good in for the Eagles. Exactly the sort of player they need IMO. And it almost doesn't count as stealing a player from another side.

And here is the release form the Eagles r.e. Raikiwasa as well as the signing of Scott Matthews as reserves coach...........

The WWTFC is pleased to announce the signing of Aseri Raikiwasa.

Raikiwasa, 21, joins the Club after playing 34 games in 3 seasons at the Port Adelaide Magpies. The versatile key defender has represented SA at U18 and U20 level and will add further flexibility to the Eagles backline.

On the signing Michael Godden said “Aseri not only has the ability to play a defensive role but also run and carry the ball so we think he’ll be a great addition to our backline. His flexibility to be able to play on a variety of opponents will be a real plus for us. Aseri is a quality person and someone that has a real desire to improve so he’s a good fit for us”.

The Club is also pleased to announce the appointment of former player Scott Mathews as its Reserves Coach for Season 2015. Mathews replaces Jarrad Wright who has taken up a role at South Adelaide.

Mathews, 36, played 96 games for the Club between 1996 and 2003 winning the Club’s Best Team Man award in 2002. Mathews was appointed Senior Coach at Trinity Old Scholars in 2012 where he has spent the last 3 years as well as being part of the Eagles development squad coaching staff in 2014.

On the appointment Football Manager Trent Hentschel said “Scott played at the Club for 8 years and also worked with our development squads last year so he has an understanding of our culture and the structures we have in place. Scott has a passion for developing young people so we’re really excited about what he brings to the Reserves Coaching Role.”

Please join the WWTFC in welcoming Aseri and Scott to the Club.

Is Chad O’Sullivan right?

SANFL needs to pay players more to end exodus to country and local clubs

THE SANFL needs to pay players more if it wants to stop them leaving for country or community clubs, former star midfielder Chad O’Sullivan says.

The salary cap has stood at $360,000 per club since 2012, with players earning about $75 a week in the reserves and up to $1500 for each league game.

Community player payments have escalated in that time, as some clubs spent up to $200,000 a season, according to league officials.

O’Sullivan, 30, quit North Adelaide midyear to join Hills Football League club Torrens Valley. The Gawler resident would not reveal his match wages at the Lions amid speculation he earned more than $2000 per game.

He said SANFL players were not paid enough for their six-day-a-week commitment and they should not be blamed for seeking better compensation elsewhere.

“The SANFL is running an elite competition on a shoestring budget and the demands on the players are ridiculous,” O’Sullivan said.

“The payment structure is too immense from a reserve player who does the same amount of training as a league player but is on $75 (per game) compared to the top end of $1000.”

O’Sullivan, who won three premierships at Central District, said the SANFL could afford to raise the cap if more money flowed down from the cash-rich AFL.

SA Community Football Board chairman David Shipway this month described excessive player payments as the “biggest issue in community footy at present”. But O’Sullivan said the wages were “just going with the times and the SANFL aren’t keeping up”.

The Community board is introducing a pay limit from 2016, following a raft of complaints from leagues that spiralling match payments are killing clubs.

O’Sullivan said this would lead some footballers to retire for fear of injury and risking income from their full-time jobs, or move interstate.

SANFL general manager Adam Kelly said the salary cap needed to strike “the right balance between properly rewarding players and keeping clubs viable”.

“We believe we are maintaining that balance and we have no intention of increasing the salary cap in the near future,” Kelly said
