I have no problem with Claremont hailed as the best state league club. They have earned it.

Yes we know, that's why the best teams were invited to play head to head. To find out

Some agreed to participate, some did not. That is their choice which is fine.

Some decided that it was too risky to the state league chances to participate given it could mean committing to four extra matches.

Claremont decided it was worth the risk and given
- they are defending WAFL premier
- they dominated the Foxtel Cup in 2012 (inc defeating VFL premier Port Melbourne)
- despite the FC they are stil top the WAFL (having smashed 2nd place East Fremantle last week)

no other club can lay claim to the same level of sucess in recent years.

In a head to head battle Central may well be the best state league side, or Norwood etc.

But if you decline to be involved, don't complain if those that do get the recognition that comes with it.

Central don't really want to be the best state league club in Australia, just the best in the SANFL. They have always declined any effort over the past 12 years for games against other clubs in other states.

Claremont wanted both and now have an the best record of any state league club in recent years.
Kudos to them.

I'm not, I'm just saying that no-one can lay claim to being the best in the land when not everyone has participated.

If they put some decent money into it then it's all in, but Vic and WA have alot stronger off the field sponsorship revenues to tap into then here hence why bother which is what happened with even South not playing their best side

No more pi$$ weak than fielding a half baked team.
Id be more upset at my club for fielding a half strength side than not entering the comp

Define half strength, 2 or 3 players rested or 11 players who would not make your first 22 selected if every player on your list is available.

A bit of both IMO
To me the side you put on the park should be the same as if you were playing an SANFL match.

Ridiculous.

If we all followed that line of thinking, no one would be crowned anything.

Claremont prove you can compete in it, win it and still win at home. It's a lesson to everyone else to have some balls.

Actually, the best teams were invited to give the AFL camera crews some practice and to discourage FoxTel subscribers from clicking over to the Free-To-Air channels outside of live AFL coverage. I do appreciate your sentiments, though.

I totally agree with you Jim 05

I was not very happy with South when they sent over an under strength side, my way of thinking was it was a capitulation that week, in fact we have been way below the set standards ever since the game against Port Melbourne and the football department have to shoulder the blame.

Congrats to Claremont, they have shown others how to compete against all comers and come out winners.

The resting of players is a balancing act.

All players need / get a break during the season ... happens in AFL, NFL and all levels of footy.

If they play state footy AND Foxtel Cup they won't get one unless rested.

What made the Magpies v Morningside selections a debacle was the numbers they rested the week after almost all players got a rest for the state game.

Claremont and Port Melbourne had a particular issue given they provided 7-8 players to the state side.

So just like balancing the interchange of players through a game to ensure all players are fresh for the finish

so to Foxtel Cup clubs must do something similar but over a season not just a game.

And for both years of the Foxtel Cup, Claremont have done that balancing exceptionally well.

If it is a 8 TEAM comp next year for the Foxtel Cup the 1st invites should go to

CLAREMONT (WAFL Prem)
East Fremantle (WAFL GF)
GEELONG (VFL prem)
Port Melbourne (VFL GF)
Norwood (SANFL GF)
West v North winner (SANFL GF)
BRISBANE LIONS (NEAFL Prem)
BURNIE (Tas Prem)

North v Geelong .... that would be fun for you Wedgie. ;)

How stupid were Claremont for going in the Foxtel Cup and ruining any chance they had of winning the WAFL premiership.
