Could have fielded a stronger side but so could East Freo. Hate excuses for losing. We just werent as good as them on the night.

Had to laugh at Graham Cornes' article on the Foxtel Cup where he suggested thats its no coincidence that Centrals demise has coincided with not participating in the Foxtel Cup.

LOL yes Graham that is the sole reason the Dogs didnt make last years GF and are sitting 5th currently.

IDIOT!

I read Graham's article a few times

1) I don't mind the general concept that when SA teams play interstate that you need to take it seriously.

However

2) The Fosters Cup of years back was against VFL (now AFL sides). It was being the underdog against a higher level. In the State of Origin charged era of the time there was a lot more interest and pride at stake.

3) The article failed to mention that NO team in the Foxtel Cup has sent their strongest side to a game in the 3 years of competition. East Fremantle also had plenty of A graders out of action.

4) There was also no mention of AFL withdrawals, hardly Norwood's call.

I think the Central / West analogy was correct to the point that Westies trips would have been a great bonding experience, for a young developing group that is beneficial.

I also think that the visiting side will have a greater advantage this year given they fly out on the Monday.

The travel factor may actually be an advantage as the teams have at least 24 hours away from other distractions and together as a team can fully focus on match preparation.

Whereas the home side (which doesn't play on their home ground anyway) has work, family and other things to deal with before turning up. This used to certainly be the case at the Gridiron Nationals where the visitors would enjoy being "full time footballers" for a few days away from home whilst the hosts would struggle.

Bottom line not one plays their best 22, winner will be lauded for effective list management, loser will be told they didn't try hard enough.

Crikey, the way he goes on you'd think it was Norwood that lost to an NEAFL side or sent sent two thirds of a reserves side to WA to get beaten by a lazy 101 points.

"There is no doubt the Foxtel Cup is a contrived competition...but..."

About as contrived as your article, Graham. Welcome to 2011.

I really thought we were past all this shite.

I'll be interested to see what type of side West Adelaide puts up for the MCG clash.

Word from Port Melbourne is that we'll be fielding a VERY STRONG team... mostly out of coincidence.

Our gun players Valenti (2 x JJ liston winner), Pinwill (Norm Goss medalist), Batsanis (VFL and SANFL premiership player) and Sandilands (... just to name a few) all had an injury interrupted start to the year and need some game time to get back into top form.

By the timing of it all (some in ressies this week, some just back in the seniors) they and others will be putting their hand up for the Foxtel Cup match.

Bloke on 1395 just said that the Foxtel Cup to the SANFL is the same as the NAB cup to the AFL. How wrong could he be!!

As advised on facebook that was me ... somehow the Foxtel Cup came up in a debate on AFL reserves. Possibily as a diversion as I was winning the main argument that SANFL league should be kept for teams that are in it to win it.

Apparently AFL sides can have reserves teams at SANFL league level because SANFL teams don't try in the Foxtel Cup. (Still working out the relevance).

I was comparing the Foxtel / NAB Cup on the basis that they are both secondary competitions to the main game which is winning the league premiership and thus no club commits 100% to it.

Where is that comparison wrong?

Im travelling over for the game. Foxtel Cup might be the only time I get to see the Borough until the finals.
Will be great if they put a decent side out (same applies to West West Adelaide).

Batsanis, Hinkley, Valenti, Burstin, etc... all need to get into some form and should play.

Just to warn Wests fans... Port Melbourne (1st) just touched up Williamstown (2nd) by 47 points yesterday at Point Gellibrand, with still 3-4 of our normal starting 22 not in the seniors.

A few key players missing, but still a fairly strong Port Melbourne side.

Plus the MCC Library has created a special record for the game!

Football will be the winner. The margin will be determined in points, one way or the other. ;)
