Back in 2003 Westies had a first year, AFL experienced coach and a group of exciting youngsters (Adam Cooney, Beau Waters, Jason Porplyzia, Shane Tuck,etc). They made the GF, were 5th in 2004 and bottom 2005-2008. They havn't played finals since they played the GF in 2003.

Just to pick you up on that b&r, we played the Elimination Final in 2004.

No way KMac would have won it, I thought he had a pretty disappointing finals series by hiw own lofty standards.

Puopolo was probably the logical choice for Norwood's best player .. I think if say Norwood had won by 6 points there's a good chance Callinan would have become the first player to win the JO in a losing side.

Finally got to watch the replay yesterday. Puopolo, in my opinion best for Norwood (by a fair bit). I couldn't imagine we'd see him in the SANFL next year.
For Central I would have best 1) Callinan (by a fair bit) 2) Thomas 3) Lawry and fourth Hayes (only because of a couple of match winning marks in the last quarter).

I agree with your post sjt, looks like Pups will go to either Port Power or if todays paper is correct Western Bulldogs, he has had a stellar year backing up last years performances, so I wish him well.

The only complaint I got with the Grand Final umpiring was that holding the ball against Norwood in the first quarter that resulted in a Dogs goal kicked by Callinan (IIRC!)...that umpire stood there like a statue for what seemed like 10 seconds before he paid "holding the ball"...you know you're in trouble when the umpire doesn't immediately call "ball up" but instead stands there like a statue looking at the contest but, sheesh, he took friggin ages to call it!!!...

Agree that was a shocker, and the ump could clearly see Callinan was holding the ball under the Norwood player.

Bought the DVD today (now got all 9 premierships on DVD) and had a good look at this incident:

1. Duigan had just received a handball and was tackled and brought to ground.
2. Left arm was pinned by the tackle. Has the ball tucked underneath his right arm.
3. Decides to have a nap and wait for the umpires whistle to ball it up.
4. Hears nothing and then decides to atleast do something.
5. As soon as he starts moving, Callinan puts his hand on the ball, stopping it from moving.
6. Pinged "holding the ball"!

Pretty hot decision. I probably would of called "ball up"...

One thing's for sure, Callinan's bump is one of those 'grand final moments' that will feature on highlight packages for years to come...

after reading the best part of 20 pages on this topic i thought i'd put a different twist on it for everyone banging on about THAT bump.
If the shoe was on the other foot and it was Phillips that took out Callinan with exactly the same bump and Norwood went on to win the flag with phillips getting the Jack Oatey, all the legs supporters would be raving about "THAT MATCH WINNING BUMP"and dogs supporters will be calling for Phillips' head and calling him a sniper.
....Get over it. That's footy!

um..define sniper?I always thought it was someone too gutless to face an opponent , usually resulting in a king hit off the ball or a cheap shot in a pack situation or the like...Callinan is not that type of player heartbeats. You know that. As I said before, Thats footy.

Interesting to also read Lee Spurr played with a broken hand. During the game when Lee was at the Southern end, I noticed him holding his hand, in a bit of pain, I thought he'd dislocated his finger. I don't remember who was on him, so I wont guess. Whoever it was, was trying to hit (slap) his hand. I think Goodrem stepped in between them when he saw what was happening. It didn't last long and was only a couple of slaps, but interesting in the context of some of the discussion.

And I judge Simon "Campbells" Phillips the winner of the Jerry D'antiochia award for Worst On Ground in the 2010 Grand Final.

The man ended up with more breaks in his jaw than disposals in just under 3 quarters of football.

Hopefully the award helps Simon make a quick recovery.
