You Am I was the deciding factor for me going!

LOL- them along with a free tick has me going! I'd prefer Westies winning, but if they snag one it only leaves South with a longer drought than the bays..

Hoping for an end to 32 year drought. Bloods should win by under 3 goals. Not being shown here in melbourne so I'll be off with the 3 billy lids to Bordertown to watch the game.

Was there in '83 with my Dad & his Brother - both Westonians.
West were the dominant Team that year, by far.
Somewhat ironic should they win on Sunday, as Mark Mickan (then Captain) missed the Grand Final in '83 & Dirk De Jong replaced him.
For Mickan, it would be a real joy to coach the 1st Flag since missing that one.

As a former Eagles Fan, I am a little glum.

I'm gunna pick a Draw & then Extra Time :D

With the way the league is dying thanks to the AFL sides and incompetence, we need a Westies win this week!

Speaking of draws between the 2 teams
1969
First Semi Final
WA 2-3....4-9...7-14...10-16 [76]
WT 5-2...8-3.....10-6...11-10 [76]
West might have been lucky WT did not kick straight in the last quarter !
There was no extra time, so they came back the following week

Replay
WA 3-2...5-3....10-7...13-11[89]
WT 5-2...6-4.....7-7... 10-8 [68]

West were eliminated in the Prelim Final
GL 19-12
WA 9-19

Grand Final
ST 24-15
GL 13-16
Perhaps the best ever player to put on a Glenelg jumper debuted in that Grand Final

Correct, Royce Hart the Richmond forward who was allowed to play in the 69 Grand Final
Something to do with him doing National Service training in South Australia ? [prob Woodside Barracks?]

Also in 1969 West Torrens scored 1969 points for in the Minor Round

The Eagles are deserving favourites. We have truly been the best side in the comp all year. On form we should win, I fear westies hard run throughout finals may take a toll. Eagles will be fresh and cherry ripe to go on this one. Eagles by 5-6 goals.

Quite extraordinary if true as they were both very strong sides over similar eras.

I can't think of too many years when both West and Torrens were strong.

As we have said ad infinitum one of Port, Norwood, North or Sturt played in every Grand Final up to 2000.

In the 40s and 50s, both sides had their moments of strength.
It, kind of, even knowing the fact that has been quoted ad infinitum, is surprising that during that period they didn't play one another.

From the period 1945 - 1954, Torrens played in 4 grand finals and won two premierships, their only real 'golden period'.
In that 10 year period, they made the finals in 8 of those years, an extremely good record.
In the next period of 9 years till 1963, they still made the finals in 5 of those years but didn't win any of them, 1963 being their best year finishing minor premiers but bowing out in straight sets with an horrific run of injuries. In 1964, the gradual demise started!

Talking to a few experts today and it was interesting that it was 2-2 on who is going to get the chocolates.

Very interesting point raised was the importance of Hartlett to curtail Wundke. The other question is who is going to stop the poster boy Andrew Ainger, the face on all of the fliers

I had a look at the Eagles training and it's fair to say there is fair amount of confidence and a bit of swagger about the group and probably rightly so. Whilst I think they will win if West can get a jump on them and be level at half time their young legs might just get them over the line.

Really looking forward to this Sunday. 8)

Just hope we learn from a couple of weeks ago! Slow and steady = lose first half, fast & attacking = win second half. Tough task to play expansive and attacking footy against best defensive team in comp, but reward is there if we do.

I was also at Westies' last grand final win, albeit as a supporter of the losing side.
Different times back then. I think the grand final sold out within a day or so of Sturt qualifying and I ended up getting tickets from the cheer squad on the Wednesday.
There seemed to be more support for West in that grand final. I dare say that every neutral supporter would have been like iron behind Westies rather than watch Sturt win their 8th flag in 18 years. Midway through the final quarter this huge Westies chant went up at the northern end, they were about 5 goals clear at the time, and apart from a couple of goals kicked in a minute by the Blues, we weren't really doing anything to suggest we were going to snatch it from the dominant force in '83. That chant was the sentinel of West bringing home the flag. The proverbial fat lady if you like.
Sturt lined up with Davies, Graham, Motley, Whittlesea, Paynter, Fry, Hollis, Brendan Howard (who it should be mentioned, has been praised by former team mates for his decision making in defence, a lot of goals were often set up by his instinctive choice of option) and Spiel in the ruck. Neil Craig didn't play in the grand final owing to injury, but still that side would have won most grand finals against other opponents, West were simply immovable that year. As many stars as I could name for Sturt West could name more in their side. Possibly the best SANFL side I have seen.
I hope they can get up for this one. Then we can pass the mantle of "last side West beat in a grand final" to the Eagles.

I reckon Eagles to win.
Although, West will have possibly four rested players returning, which could be a massive asset.
Will be hoping for a Bloods win, sorry Eags.

I'm out of here.

Correct. It was Trevor Clarke who cleaned him up. Clarke was a wingman not noted for his aggression at the man. It was an accident but it took Hart out of the game for much of the contest.
Hart reputedly was paid $2,000 to play in the game which equated to about 3 months salary for most people those days. An incredible amount for a SANFL player in those days.

Eagles by 11-20.

Crowd 21,115

I recall 83 as a primary school aged kid living in Marleston hearing the premiership celebrations from Richmond oval.

What are car park options for bbq before the game. Council bbq by the bridge, or parking in torrens parade grounds.

Can anyone advise if Adelaide oval's northern car park was open for any of the finals to date?. SANFL/SMA/Adelaide oval (ring different numbers same chick answers) advised me yesterday that oval car park not open for the GF.

Nothern car park (on the grass) not open, just the small ashphalted area by the gate.
