No doubt Geoff Motley had more talent that the Gowans twins combined and then some, but I think their achievement, i.e. 9 premiership medals is at least in the same ballpark. It's a great achievement in any era.

Definately true but guys like Motley need to get their accolades before we even think of naming anything after a modern day footballer

With the exception of Knuckles South don't have much representation.

If anyone at South deserved to have something named after them I would probably suggest these players in the following order:

Peter Darley
Jimmy Deane
Danny Del-Re

Half these guys running around now would of been b graders in that era.
No one in the last 20 years would be fit to do up the bootlaces of someone like Motley.

See how well the 1950's players would have played the modern zoning game and their associated level of fitness.

Plus they used drop-kicks and no out of bounds on full. Players smoked etc. Not saying who is better, its purely subjective, but this blind belief that somehow everyone was better 'back then' is sheeeet.

So what you are saying is we shouldnt acknowledge Norwoods premierships in the 1880's as they surely wouldnt have been up to the standard of the 70's

To summarize some of the better players pre WW2 didn't play league because of other priorities, now some dont play league because they are drafted to AFL clubs.
There is plenty of players in the SANFL who would make it at an AFL club if given the opportunity. See, Spurr and Puopolo.
At the end of the day for 130 years it has been the SANFL and it has been MOSTLY the best footballers in SA in it and as such all achievments should be treated equal

I'm not gonna bother comparing footballers pointless exercise.

But much like when u hit a 100 in cricket the scorebook doesn't say how u made it.

I'm sure Norwood fans enjoyed the 2012 premiership as much as any of the 1990 premierships

At the end of the day the SANFL has always been the second best standard comp in the land.

I wouldn't have any issue if the Gowans had something named after them, any league at any time it is an amazing achievement.

Evem if it was a mural at the end of one bar showing their achievement, would be a good acknowledgement that the SANFL didnt die in 1991

Each has won 2 less flags than your entire club has. In about 120 years less duration.

If they don't deserve a chair your mob don't deserve a door hinge.

True. I think the person/s responsible for the naming must have a problem with Motley...

Are we talking about who is the better player or who has contributed to SA footy more?
The amount of premierships you have won doesn't make you a better player or more valuable to the state.
Didn't Lindsay Head only win 1 premiership........likewise Bob Hank?
You would take Head and Hank over the Gowans any day.
And Russell Ebert aside.........plenty of Port people will say Geoff Mötley was the next best!!
It's all subjective I guess.

Its not the relative ability of teams in a given era, compared to the player of 2013, that is relevant.

What is relevant is the status/standard of the competition, relative to any other football in the state at the time.

Yes, the football in the AFL can be very unattractive, but the fact is its the strongest competition in the country, and SA has an involvement in this league via 2 clubs. The AFL is the most prestigious competition in the country, and this state is directly a part of it.

Looking at it a different way- the overwhelming majority of young SANFL footballers aspire to play in the AFL (and yes there are exceptions).

In Motley's day, the state team be comprised soley of SANFL footballers. The equivalent side if picked today -State of Origin would need to be brought back - would almost certainly be filled with AFL footballers who started their career with an SANFL side-ie no SANFL players.

The latter. I'm not sure that it matters how good a footballer you are as such, but there's no doubt in my mind that the Gowans are modern-day greats (I like this term because it's ambiguous: flattering, but it subtly acknowledges that the SANFL isn't quite what it used to be.)

And yes Head won one flag, but Bob Hank won two.

Yeah sure you really cannot make outlandish statements because different eras means different styles of play different kicking styles not as many clubs in the league throughout different eras of the SANFL different game plans different rules ie interchange bench ETC ETC ETC ETC all eras are unique so if we go along your lines of thought that means all of the players of of the old era would be C graders in the modern era !!!!!!

Gowans are legends and maybe they could name some part of Adelaide Oval after them along with G Motley and a host of other players who deserve the same recognition
SANFL 2000 - 2011 Central District 12 consecutive Grand Final appearances and 9 Premierships.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFF.

Hit em hard let them get up and hit em again.

I wouldnt have a problem with a plaque or something similar, recognising the elite SANFL footballers post 1990:

Eg.

- Gowans x 2
- Paul Thomas
- James Allan
- Chambers
- Mules
- Ciccolella
- McKenzie
- Sheedy
- Clayton

etc etc

Premierships aside........why are the Gowans modern day greats?
Don't believe they won any Magarey medals?
How did they poll in B&F?
They are good honest players who gave their all for their club but they fall short of modern day greats. IMO.
The only modern day great I can think of would be James Allen based on the accolades he received.

Just annoys me that people don't rate their achievments or any premierships post 1990.

Im sure after the two WW clubs were weakened by deaths and or injuries making the comp not as prestigous or that Norwood only beat a couple other clubs to win their 1st dozen flags pre 1900. To me any premiership won post 1990 is still the equivalent of any won in the 60's, 70's and 80's and to devalue the achievments of the Gowans is not on. It doesnt matter that in some opinions they were not as good as Motley, simple fact is they were good enough to be in the best 21 of the team that won 9 flags just the same as Motley

One way it could be looked at is that they were good enough to win their jack oatey medals as semi proffesional footballers competiting for those honours against some full time footballers.

I agree, comparing players ability is pointless and could go on for ever, they won 9 premierships that comparable to almost any individual record. I'm sure when Norwood win the flag this year it will still be special.

Btw I don't think they should have anything named after them at Adelaide oval

Agree with all what you say. I think they were fantastic for Central Districts and fully deserve recognition of their achievements at Adelaide oval, I certainly would have liked to have had both of them at Westies.
