Having talked to an SANFL commissioner for a while tonight I think the title of this thread should be changed to when not if.

Sad days.

It seems that only two or three years ago people were complaining that port/crows shouldn't have reserve sides in the comp because they would be too strong.... now it seems it's because they would be too weak:?:

Personally I'm not that fussed, would prefer a reserved side because AFL sides should h as e complete control of their assets, but if we have to have reserve sides, then the sanfl clubs could be split in half (along the AFL father son lines) and their respective players could be allocated to these clubs. Much easier to manage your reserves at 4/5 clubs than at nine.

my boys are West Adelaide members all three of my kids have West Adelaide jerseys. They know the importance of West Adelaide. They see the Geelong VFL team as a different team not the same as the AFL one.

If we have to have AFL reserves sides in the SANFL, they shouldn't play for points.

Right now I feel like I would not be interested to attend an SANFL game involving an AFL reserves team of any kind. But never say never and all that. I will be monitoring how the WAFL goes this year with interest. I get the feeling that the SANFL needs a serious shakeup though - but quite what that means exactly I do not know.

One question - with the handing back / selling of the Cows and Powder licences to the AFL, will this all be MORE or LESS likely to happen? I don't get why it would be more likely that there would be increased pressure to install AFL reserves teams in the SANFL once the SANFL has more-or-less relinquished its interest in those two clubs?

Will it raise the standard of SANFL game play?

I think so. :D

But the 2 AFL clubs would dominate one would think. :D

One, two or three players coming back to a SANFL team may help its chances of winning but 23 may be over whelming. :D

What is happening to our SANFL guys...

I don't agree, they purpose of the reserves sides wouldn't be to win a flag, it would mainly be to keep the players all together & not spread across the SANFL & secondly, for player experimentation, in different roles & positions.

don't let them play for points then! The impression I get from the Crows & Power coaching staff is that they want all their AFL listed players in 1 team-a reserves team-if this is their only reason for a reserves side, they don't need to play for points!

If they don't play for points, it becomes a bye. Who wouldn't rest players when given the opportunity?

They have no place in our league especially if the licences are sold.

That's the puzzling part ...if (when) the SANFL offloads the AFL licences, why would the SANFL even entertain the idea of AFL 'reserves' sides in the comp ... let them play in the bastardised VFL comp.

An interesting question.

I wasn't bothered when the Crows were formed as I saw them, then, as representative of the SANFL and a fair response to head off the aspirations and back-stabbing actions of the Port Adelaide Magpies if we were not going to just expel Port and maintain the SANFL's total independence.

I felt like walking away when the SANFL backed down and gave Port the second licence - and to some extent I did.

When I lived in Melbourne, constantly exposed to the Melbourne media's hyping up whatever Melbourne based side looked strong each year, I warmed to the Power as well - and to all the other non-Melbourne sides. My interest in the AFL increased thereby.

Now I'm back in Adelaide, my interest in the AFL is waning.
My interest in the Power is waning as they continue to push their self-centred agenda.
My interest in the Crows will wane if they are no longer SANFL owned and are just another branch of the Victorian "AFL".
My interest in the SANFL will wane if they bend over for the Vics by allowing reserve sides to AFL teams.
My interest in Norwood will last longest as it is an attachment formed in childhood - they take longer to get over.

I don't know how long it will take me to walk away entirely, but, while I've played various sports and followed some, sport has never been the centre of my life...

I just do not know at this stage my head says stuff the AFL by heart is following Central in the SANFL but i guess the only thing is that all supporters have the opportunity to boycott these pseudo teams by not attending who wants to watch a game where your team does not play for premiership points i guess i will go fishing or do garden that weekend ?? but in saying that we all could go along and give these teams heaps of stick if we wanted to why is it that with the BILLION DOLLAR plus revenue the AFL BEAST generates it still has no AFL RESERVES competition because it wants to entrench its tentacles into every state league.

whadya all think.
