Was supposed to go to the game last night but chose to visit some friends from the Riverland who'd just had a baby.

Not only did I miss a superlative victory by the Doggies, I missed what sounds like one of funniest things on a footy field (a mark paid from a handball and then a penalty for overstepping the mark) but I also missed that ginormous slippery dip! The number of Red Devils I had yesterday, I'm sure I would've had a go on it.

Oh well, that's what you get for being a loyal friend.

Apparently the operator has had previous trouble with misbehaving adults going on it so he made a very strict no adult policy.

And I've sworn for years that I saw Fred Phillis do similar in the cricket nets pocket (NE?) at the Bay. The umpire (I think there was only one in those days) was distracted by some off-the ball physical stuff and when he turned back to the play, Fred was just marking it, and it was duly paid. Only thing was, he had just thrown the ball into the air himself.

As for the example last night, Goodrem was on the receiving end of a long handpass, and pulled up suddenly to let his opponent overrun him - and it did look exactly like he had stopped for a mark - then his opponent managed to turn and advance on Trent just as the ump whistled the mark, and then accordingly the 25m penalty was given for the breach of the mark. That certainly wasn't the only time the Bays got the rough end of the pineapple, but we copped a few oddballs too. I don't think the umpiring was a complete shambles, but there were certainly moments.
