Update after Round 16...

Just 3 games .. total 7,650 the crowd avg 2,550 per game

Interestingly this season we are yet to have a round that averaged UNDER 2,500 per game.

Last year by the end of Rd 16 we had 7 games with crowds less than 2K, this year so far only 4.
On the flip side, this time last year we had 20 games with crowds above 3,500 ... this year only 15

So as at the end of Rd 16 here is were we sit
(from 2000-2011)
1st - 2001 - 3,434 per game
2nd - 2011 - 3,332 per game
=3rd - 2002 - 3,277 per game
=3rd - 2010 - 3,277 per game
5th - 2008 - 3,270 per game

To have the best minor round crowds this century we need
- 72,517 people
- to attend 28 games
- average 2,590 per game

Last week that was 2,587 per game, week before 2,635 per game ... STILL IN THE RUNNING.

Update after Round 17

Total Crowd for the Round 17 was 11,109 (avg 2,777 pg)

Still to have a round averaging under 2,500 per game this year.

Where we site relative to recent years
(as at end of Round 17)
1st - 2001 ---3,381 pg
2nd - 2011 --- 3,299 pg
3rd - 2002 --- 3,262 pg
4th - 2010 -- 3,260 pg
5th - 2008 -- 3,232 pg

So to have the best crowds this century (and beat 2002) we need
61.408 to attend the last 24 games
Average 2,559 per game

Like a one day game we are staying ahead of the worm
Rd 14 needed 2,635 pg
Rd 15 needed 2,587 pg
Rd 16 needed 2,590 pg
now Rd 17 need 2,559 pg

What crowd figures would you expect this week?
A bit worried about a couple of games especially with rain predicted.
Probably only expect 2-2500 at elizabeth and really fear for richmond crowd, possibly under 2000. Should get a decent crowd at the bay for the southern derby, possibly 3000. Normally would like to see about 5k at the parade but being a saturday arvo game and with the port faithfull having a showdown to attend on sunday id think 4000 would be acceptable.

- 2,000 at Richmond
- 3,500 at Norwood
- 2,500 at Eliz on Aug 6

Going to do it easy this round. By my calculations we only need 398 people to turn up next week to be above the average. Hopefully being the only game that weekend a few neutrals venture up there and they get 3000+ which would be huge.
Must admit i thought the crowd at the parade was pushing 5k

Agreed Jim, was a good three games crowd wise. Getting 3,200 to a Glenelg v South game was the highlight whilst expectations were always high for a good turnout to Norwood v Port at Norwood

As of Monday August 1 we now need only an average of 2,456 per game to attend the final 21 matches.

A total of 12,445 attended Rd 18 (average 3,111 pg)

With 5 rounds (20 games left) need another 48,963 to attend

That's 2,449 per game.

With fine weather forecast and games at Norwood and Glenelg this weekend (Rd 19) another round above 12,000
is quite possible.

Phil H, Let's hope the crowd pulling blockbuster games coming up like South v West at Noarlunga and South v Eagles at Noarlunga can get the crowd figures over the line. ;)

Mock if you must but South are currently on track for their 6th straight season of home crowd increases.
(Need just 3,774 to attend last 2 games, avg 1,857pg)

It's consistent steady growth that with lights and improved on field efforts should continue for some time yet.

Indeed one of the two main reasons we are seeing good SANFL crowd growth in recent seasons is because the poorer drawing clubs in South, West and the Eagles have had some strong increases.

2011 home match crowds compared with 2008
- West up 81%
- Eagles up 28%
- South up 21%

The other is Norwood home match crowds which are up over 1,000 per home game since 2008.

They are coming from a low base though which makes it look bigger when using percentages. I would have thought Norwoods night games and Glenelg home games crowds would have a lot to do with it as well over the last 2 - 3 years.

Based on last 2-3 years we are down 35% - coming off a base of an average home crowd of 5000 in 2008.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Well seeing you asked HP

Home Match Crowds 2008 to 2011 (Rd 18)
In order of NUMERIC growth just for you HP

West from 1670pg to 3,035pg +1365pg +82%
Norwood from 3901pg to 5,061pg +1160pg +30%
Eagles from 2056pg to 2,629pg +573pg +28%
South from 1931pg to 2,339pg +409pg +21%
North from 2443pg to 2,757pg +314pg +13%
Sturt from 3243pg to 3,334pg -91pg -3%
Port from 3423pg to 3,206pg -218pg -6%
Central from 3698pg to 3,178pg -520pg -14%
Glenelg from 5158pg to 4,051pg -1108pg -21%

To be fair to Glenelg 2008 was a one off year when 11,827 turned up
to the Sturt game during the AFL mid season break.
Following in their average home mach crowds since 2003.
2003 - 2,699
2004 - 2,563
2005 - 2,749
2006 - 3,455
2007 - 3,125
2008 - 5,158
2009 - 4,024
2010 - 4,191
2011 - 4,051

To illustrate my point re the weakest links being stronger in 2008 we had 23 games with a crowd under 2,000 ... so far in 2011 we have had 4.

It was just an observation , no need to get all steamed up about a simple comment.

Thanks for the figures ,next time PM me if they are just for me. ;)

I am surprised by Glenelgs figures however , I thought the opposite but I was wrong.

You do follow Sturt and go to games, don't you HP? ... then you will remember that large crowd against the Bays in 2008?

Stop picking on the Good Phil by the way ... it's the Bad Phil you're after. :D

Keep up the great work Good Phil ...
