on the game the umpiring was vey poor for both sides, 3 umpires can come up with 3 different versions of the rules. The AFL style of umpiring is ruining our game.

Eagles were the better team today but couldnt take the chances, they should have won by 7 or 8 goals. One decison shouldnt be the big talking point of the game. My views was that it was a marking contest which McLeay took if fairly. Things were bad from the umpires that a eagles player took a clear mark in front of where we were standing which wasnt paid.

Norman was happy with the 4 quarter effort but upset that they didnt take their chances when they were there. Skill levels were shocking.

Bet if it was first v second today those clowns in white would have called play on. Also no wonder those clowns needed to security to get off the ground...it was an ABSOLUTE DISGACE the way they umpired for most of the day. Im goin to buy some $2.00 glasses from the two dollar shop this week and ask them if they need them before the start of next weeks game!

Umpiring definitely confusing and inconsistent all day. I understand the frustrations Sturt fans would be feeling. However if we had lost we could also point to a raft of decisions that went against us in both 50's. Thanks to Hopeful Jelly for detailing them! That holding the ball non-decision in the first quarter was one of the worst I've seen in a while.

But yes, the Eags were ok without being great. I too wonder if we are over rated but somehow we are 7-3 which isn't a bad position to be in! We seem to get over the line more often than not without ever really dominating a match.

Was pleasing to see Salter back today. Didn't dominate but had an influence. His desire was great. Why Port persist with him in defence is beyond me.

One posterhas posted 3 free kicks they should have got , no arguement but 3 is good considering what Stuurt did not get.Enough said on the again woeful standard of umpiring.

I assume you are referring to me ... yes I agree the free kick to Staple was a poor decision but there were a number of Sturt supporters at the ground and on this site that seemed to be blaming the result on this single free kick. My point was if people want to consider a single decision that "determined" the result of the game, how about considering another 3 poor decisions that Sturt got goals from which also shouldn't have been paid? Implying that I meant these were the only 3 bad decisions against the Eagles all day is incorrect, nor was I implying that we deserved every free kick we got.

On a day when it seemed there were as many bad decisions as there were correct ones by the umpires, some Sturt supporters blaming the game's result on one single decision I think is more based on emotion than anything else.

Did not see this game but the Adelaide Now article is almost solely focused on the last decision and its incorrectness. Please post link if able.

I think Sturt lost because they didn't kicked a bigger score than The Eagles. Next.

Hard to know if we are overrated. Agree we don't seem to be dominating a game, and the footy we are playing rarely feels like it "click", expcet for perhaos early against the Bays. But it is similar to last year, and the gutsy efforts in last year's finals coupled with some name recruits overshadow the fact we were the 4-5th team for the majority of last year. Having said that, I was expecting a top-two minor round finish.
We somehow need to get more out of our smaller players. Goldsworthy has improved, but doesn't give the impression he will ever be a premiere mid-fielder, Rimmington is now playing his part even if it doesn't show on the stats sheet, improvement from Hall once he gets a few games under his belt could be crucial to our chances. The forward line we had today is the equal of any in the competition, but today we didn't use them effectively, especailly going with the wind.

Eagles sneak home
Warren Partland From: The Advertiser June 12, 2011 7:16pm

A LATE goal to Lee Staple gave the Eagles a six-point win over Sturt at Unley today.

Sport can be cruel. Just ask Sturt coach Luke Norman.

The Double Blues are not travelling well, an obvious statement given they are planted at the bottom of the ladder after 11 rounds and Norman is under pressure.

Sturt full forward Matthew Duldig had had a quiet day against Woodville-West Torrens at Unley before kicking a goal deep in the final quarter. Aiden Riley then kicked a behind and the scores were level. A draw, a fitting result after a competitive - albeit not pretty - struggle, loomed.

Sturt full back James McLeay was another having an ordinary day. But when he took a strong mark in defence just seconds from the final siren that draw seemed even more likely. But umpire Mathew Oates deemed McLeay had pushed Lee Staple in the back.

Credit to Staple for nailing the goal from 50m but this game did not deserve to be decided by a poor umpiring call.

Norman showed enormous restrain in refusing to comment on the decision. He said he was not angry, just disappointed the game was ''there to be won and we didn't.''

So Warren Partland rocked up at the 20 minute mark of the final quarter to write his description of the game did he?

A few seconds as reported... my guess around 120-180 seconds! :-)

Probably 90 seconds. At the time, with few goals in the last quarter, was half expecting the siren to go while he had his kick. After the goal Sturt won the centre square, went wide to half forward, think it went out of bounds, Eagles won the ball back into their forward line and there was at least one out of bounds and one ball-up in their forward lines.

From memory, the Staple goal was at about the 27 minute mark and the final term went about 29 minutes I think.

Seems to me people see things how they want them to be rather than how they are/were. We all wanted the fairy tale finish and were frustrated we didn't get it.

Sturt held on all day and almost pulled off a great victory. WWT would have considerred themselves robbed it they'd lost (check the Stats http://www.sanfl.com.au/livestats/match2/)

As for the 'Decision' - I was on top off the hill @ the northern 50m arc waiting for my kid to finish his business behind a tree and had a great view (In fact its about all I could see). I watched McLeay use his forearm in the WWT players back [u]twice[\u] to push him up the field before the kick even came in. Then when the ball came in he gave the slightest push-off to step back and take the mark. It wasn't big but it was there and I believe the 2 prior shunts would have drawn the umpires attention to his actions. A player of McLeay's experience should not have been surprised by the free. Kurtze also had a good shot at touching the ensuing kick on the goal line but had an air swing (admittedly under pressure).

Impressive debut from Hansen. I think the double blues will fancy their chances next week.
