Oh, but they would if only they saw our new toilet facilities. Pride of the North.

YES! WELL worth the trip!

Unfortunately, with the new interpretations this season, the decision was a correct one. Haydon was fantastic in his effort to win the footy when out numbered, but, as soon as he dived on the footy, he had to make an effort to get it out and on the replay, you can see he didn't. Correct call by the umpy there.

Glad your not an umpire Big Phil ;)

imho that rule lacks a feel for the game, obviously if he was to get a handball out he needs to drag the ball in to get it to his right hand to make a handball, at that point the players who didnt want the ball jump on him and get the decision.

we claim to be 'real' football, this is a rule that is a major turnoff in the AFL and one of the reason many people are coming back to the SANFL.

Lets be the league that rewards players who are first to the ball.

If you're on the ground and drag the ball in you're taking the responsibility to get the ball on. If you don't want that responsibility then tap the ball onto a teammate.

An outlandish and wild idea that will lead to a 'Please Explain' from the AFL Central Committee ;)

And thats why we have situations where players dont want to be the first to the ball.

The game is about being first to the ball and kicking or handballing it, not being first to the ball and tapping it or waiting to be second to the ball and getting an easy holding the ball decision.

Had a chat after the presentations with a league player about the decision and even he admitted these days you have to make that split decision whether you go in or just wait for your opponent to get the ball as it becomes just as big an advantage.

The first part of football i was taught as a youngster was that you go in and get the ball, sadly this isnt always part of the game now.

Whatever happened to In The Back? Surely If 1, 2 or more players are sitting on you it's in the back? No wonder the player can't get the ball out!

You would like to think that umpires would use common sense in these situations..................sorry what was I thinking.

On one note completely unrelated to the action - I've been going to Elizabeth for over 30 years and that was the coldest day I have ever experienced there. Driving from past Noarlunga, I didn't think the weather would be the same. It wasn't. It was colder :) . The number of people at the ground who said the same thing was amazing.

To be fair, we give out umpires a bake every week, but for all their mistakes I think they generally err on the side of rewarding the first man to the ball.

Also, I'm probably on my own on this, I wish they would scrap the IMHO ridculous rule of not being able to take it out of the ruck

Yeah dont get me wrong i think the umpires were really good this week, i just think that the intepretation is a bit ordinary especially if we are claiming to be 'REAL' football.

To be honest, I thought the umpiring was pretty reasonable and consistent. Was sitting right in front of the Callinan deliberate out of bounds decision, and it was there every day of the week IMHO. That said, thought the Magpies were a little unlucky in a patch of about ten minutes in the third term in their forward 50 with a few that could have gone either way.

JK, you and I often disagree on things, and this is no exception surprisingly - I'd rather keep the rule about grabbing it out of the ruck, as it is. It stops big basketball style ruckmen from simply leaping over the top and seizing it. Keep it the way it is and it makes for an even contest between two players.

Nope, it makes for lazy ruckmen hat don't work as hard to get to the contest, takes away the advantage that a ruckman should earn by getting to the contest when his counterpart doesn't and doesn't little to progess the play .. How often do you see a ruckman put it straight to his rover then the rover is mobbed for a ball-up? What is the difference between that and a ruckman grabbing it? How many great goals did we some from someone taking the ball out of the ruck and how many are we likely to see now?

As I said, appreciate I'm likely on my own, but it is a flat out stupid rule that was a knee-jerk reaction to one mans dominance in the AFL

May have the odd spell in their mate, but I don't think I would be wrong in he saying he spent the majority of his time up forward. Finished the game with 19 touches, 9 marks, 3 goals and 3 tackles so you'd have to say a pretty fair outing. Did burn the ball a couple of times and looked like he needed the run, pretty good overall considering he was returning from injury.

For me it was borderline putting-on-the-jumper territory all day...walked to the ground with just jeans and a guernsey over the top of a t-shirt but during the match i'd put a jumper on, then take it off after 10 minutes...
