Unfortunately, with the new interpretations this season, the decision was a correct one. Haydon was fantastic in his effort to win the footy when out numbered, but, as soon as he dived on the footy, he had to make an effort to get it out and on the replay, you can see he didn't. Correct call by the umpy there.

imho that rule lacks a feel for the game, obviously if he was to get a handball out he needs to drag the ball in to get it to his right hand to make a handball, at that point the players who didnt want the ball jump on him and get the decision.
we claim to be 'real' football, this is a rule that is a major turnoff in the AFL and one of the reason many people are coming back to the SANFL.
Lets be the league that rewards players who are first to the ball.

The game is about being first to the ball and kicking or handballing it, not being first to the ball and tapping it or waiting to be second to the ball and getting an easy holding the ball decision.
Had a chat after the presentations with a league player about the decision and even he admitted these days you have to make that split decision whether you go in or just wait for your opponent to get the ball as it becomes just as big an advantage.
The first part of football i was taught as a youngster was that you go in and get the ball, sadly this isnt always part of the game now.

To be fair, we give out umpires a bake every week, but for all their mistakes I think they generally err on the side of rewarding the first man to the ball.
Also, I'm probably on my own on this, I wish they would scrap the IMHO ridculous rule of not being able to take it out of the ruck

CK wrote:JK, you and I often disagree on things, and this is no exception surprisingly - I'd rather keep the rule about grabbing it out of the ruck, as it is. It stops big basketball style ruckmen from simply leaping over the top and seizing it. Keep it the way it is and it makes for an even contest between two players.
