bugger it! let's have no footy on EVERY religious day then, so everyone can reflect. If you want to reflect, then do it but us reprobates don't need religion, we want footy!

I don't go to many SANFL or AFL games as I still play but if they were to showcase a Port vs Norwood game on Good Friday I'd be there for sure.

Good Friday is not even a public holiday in the States, believe it or not!

Kind of wrong because there is no national public holidays in the US, its state based and many states do in fact have a public holiday for Good Friday. For eg its a public holiday in Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Dakota, Tennessee and Texas.

Nothing like the same debate, year in year out

Why not have a 'carnival' in each state on Good Friday - 'Micks' v 'Prodies' ;)

FWIW...

I can't believe that as a nation that promotes it's 'multi-culturalism' & tries to portray itself as a non-racist society, we manage to have rules for a Christian Event such as this & not have our MOST popular sport being played.

I also think it's incredible that the State Govt. has 'frozen' my TAB Phone Account for the day.
Meaning I can't get a Fixed Odds bet for the Von Dousa tomorrow!!!
As if we needed any more proof that this state is a 'back water'

Yes Dutchy, point taken, but...

The advantage I have with this account is that there are NO account tranaction reports or records on bank statements! That is a positive if you think about it ;)

There are 11 national public holidays in the US, of which Easter is not one of them. Only 11 states in the US even have Good Friday as a State public holiday, meaning 80% don't.

The United States does not have national holidays in the sense of days on which all employees in the U.S. receive a day free from work and all business is halted.

Could be called "Philistine Friday Footy"
I'm all for it but not if it's going to be limited to the same 2 clubs playing each year. Such is the shambles that is ANZAC Day in the AFL.

How is it that churches are supposed to have any influence over whether or not football is played on any day of the year, the reason that it isn't has nothing to do with any of the various religious groups around town. There are far more God botherers in NSW and they seem to have no problem with Rugby matches being held on that day.

The actual reason that the SANFL don't play football on Good Friday is because of the sheer loss they will make on the game. Anyone who needs to get there via public transport can forget about going for starters. Public Transport runs on approximately one third of the timetable of normal public holiday transport. Various buses don't run at all or have a service every three hours or so. Privatised Bus Companies have no funding to pay people three times there wage for working on Good Friday and Christmas Day so they just don't bother at all.

Everyone who works at the Ground on Good Friday also gets to be paid three times their wage, legally this includes Umpires as well as all the ticket sellers, Caterers and so on. Legally they cant sell any alcohol at the ground, so there is no bar tab coming in which is where a fair percentage of the nights takings other than ticket sales come from.

Triple time on Good Friday is a good thing IMO and something that Unions are hardly likely to see abolished any time soon.

Nothing at all is stopping the SANFL from having a Friday night match on Good Friday, would not worry me if they did, - would be interesting to go along to a match where the bar serves everyone a cup of cordial or so on, yet I somehow cant see it happening any time soon.

We have this debate every year, would be a good thing if people at least got their facts straight about why it does not happen and set to addressing the actual issues of what needs to be done to make it happen instead of whinging that it must be all the fault of x and x church or whatever.

Dogger, if you extended that principle to players, you may find you cannot field a full side though.

Could there be a Good Friday Carnival day held at Adelaide Oval, based on the fact Central play Norwood on Anzac Day could we have had

eg, 12:00- Sturt vs Port
3:00- North vs Glenelg
6:30- West vs South

If you are going to play football on Good Friday, keep it to the evening. The sacred time is actually 3:00pm when the death of Jesus is commemorated.
However, as stated earlier, the reason for not having a match on this day may be more to do with cost than religious observance.
Cheers
