Free alcohol is a fantastic idea.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I reckon a good compromise has been discussed in parts in this topic.
We have Good Friday as a football free day when it falls on a Monday.

Let's face it. There are posters on this form who need to drink just to get through the day.

No footy on Good Friday .. how tragic.

The above is possibly the most surreal thing I have ever seen written on This August Forum. Take a bow bayman!

Incidentally - is there anything which prohibits Xians from partaking on booze or sport on Good Friday? Is it written somewhere that this day must be a day of rest? I recovered from catholicism about 16 years ago and my memory of the catholic dogma is admittedly not good, but I thought that since Vatican II the only thing different about Good Friday was that you had to abstain from red meat?

nuggety goodness, you're the resident religious expert here, what's the current rule?

pseudo, good friday indeed DID FALL on easter monday way back in the 1880's..........

there was a horse called good friday & it fell in the great eastern steeplechase on easter monday ;)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Let's face it...some SANFL supporters need alcohol just to numb the pain from watching their team continually underperform all the time. Do they have A.A. groups out Glenelg, Prospect or Noarlunga way??? Or is it just a case of those supporters won't put their hand up and admit they have a problem and need some help???

Mickyj wrote:I think we have made a point there are some posters who must drink to enjoy footy games

Such as [insert underperforming club here] supporters???

Adelaide Hawk wrote:Let's face it. There are posters on this form who need to drink just to get through the season.

Corrected.

Some of Central Districts pre-2000 performances turned some Dogs supporters into raging alcoholics...but with all this success we've had lately, they haven't changed their ways! :D  I could name a few names on here such as UKFan, Dogwatcher, WHUFC...

I would like to make my own choices about whether I can attend footy on Good Friday and have a beer while I'm there, rather than my choices being dictated by a religious minority.

Do players, coaches, support staff, car park attendants, stadium/oval employees, dispensers of said beer get to have a choice, rather than their choices being dictated by a minority of football supporters? (unless all teams are playing).

Good to see in the paper today that West is seriously considering Good Friday Footy under lights at Richmond. Well done Westies, I hope it goes through.

I've never quite seen the sense of the prohibition about eating red meat on Fridays, even Good Friday. I know, vaguely, that it had some historical rationale.
I had a friend in first year Uni who was Catholic and had a pie & chips for lunch every day except Friday when he had a pastie & chips.
One day I asked why he bothered since there were particles of meat visible in his pastie..
I was mortified when he then spent the rest of his lunch time picking out the little bits of meat to avoid eating them.
I wished I'd never mentioned it...

For somebody who believes that a piece of wafer biscuit magically becomes the actual flesh and blood of a bloke who was his own father and walked the earth three days after dying, I'm sure that a ban on beef products on one specific day of the year makes perfect sense.

OK then, you can go to work on Good Friday.
Its funny how people whinge and complain about no footy on Good Friday due to a "religious minority" but are happy to have the public holiday. :?

For the record, it doesnt bother me whether there is footy on Good Friday or not. Normally, if your team doesnt have the bye, you get to see your team play at some stage during the weekend. Good Friday is a good time to spend with family or, play video games all day.
