bayman, this is the only time in history that I've agreed with TSG and it will probably be the last, but he's right.

This is how football is played now. Players work hard up and down the ground. It was a trial game and your boys played 27 players and West played 23.

Both sides would have been happy with the outing.

From a West point of view, it was a pleasing display, with a host of players to still come in. Just as pleasing was the display of so many Under 18's in the first game.

it might not work but if we use it today it did work

does anyone know how bad alex scott (wa) shoulder & craig pitt (glg) ankle are ?

The clash of heads in the last quarter was infront of me, any idea how (and who) the Bay player is?

that was tom logan, i don't know how he is either

I spoke to the Bays Head Trainer after the game and was advised that he was OK ---- was good to see how both club trainers worked together to get him to the doctors room quickly & safely - well done all training staff :ymapplause: :ymapplause:

boys, there is a difference between having numbers behind the ball (as central do it better than the rest) & flooding which has everyone behind the ball & if my critics don't understand that difference well it isn't my fault they can't see the difference

bayman, I always respect your views and you're right, there is a difference. Yesterday, however, neither side deliberately flooded. It was a trial match and there was no point to flooding. I can guarantee you that West didn't deliberately flood and I'm sure Mark Mickan wouldn't have instructed Glenelg to flood.

What you see now is that coaches demand that players work hard to help their defence at all times. Players who won't do that won't be selected. Also, the slower the ball movement forward, the more numbers the opposition can get into defence.

It is also more apparent when there is a wind favouring one end, as there was yesterday.

In a trial game, coaches will try different things, but flooding wasn't one of them yesterday.

You know all this, of course, but you've said the same thing every time you see Westies and it has become a self-fulfilling prophecy for you.

The obvious answer is that if West were flooding, how did they manage to kick more goals than Glenelg?

As bloods08 said, Glenelg played exactly the same. Whoever you play next week will also play the same.

That's the way it is.

totally agree, even your half forward flankers and forward pocket players have strong defensive duties in modern day football, probably even moreso than some defenders as attacks now start from defence. Every player on the field is required to be involved in the defensive aspect of the game.

will add as well, i think players fitness levels being so high as meant teams can 'flood'. Long gone are the days of the small chubby bloke at back pocket, skinny lightning quick boy on the wing, biggest fattest kid at full forward and smallest bloke on the ground rover/forward pocket.

First of all, this is not a loaded question.

I was at the game yesterday and I know he was named to play, but did Kane Tenace play? I dont remember him at all on the ground. Also were there many senior Glenelg players missing?

I was at the game yesterday to watch the young bloods mainly in the ressies and if the league teams both bays and west play that brand - I know its a trial - sturt and centrals will smash em. west clearly have improved but they are only half way there and will struggle to make the 5. Glenelg where obviously experimenting. Got to hand it to Collins he has them enthusiastic. That only gets him so far - talent will be his down fall in the end. just picking 6' 2" players that run in lines only gets you so far. As the AFL sides are finding out. Players need a brain and some of his are dumb sometimes.

Posters need a brain sometimes, too, hasbeen.

I'm happy with West's continuing improvement and I'd remind you that we beat Central last year. (Sturt smashed us :( )

If you think sides show everything in the first trial game of the year, then refer to my first sentence.

PS: The young bloods won the first trial by 13 goals and played great footy.

As Bayman said played first half. Copped a knee to the back and tried to play on but was rested after half time.

West played well I thought, thought their workrate was good, thetook advantage of our mistakes and did enough to suggest that they will be around the mark this year. Best thng about our game was that it was slightly better than our 1st trial last year.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Typical first trial game for both sides for mine ... shaking the cobwebs out.

West showed some good glimpses of their running game at times, whilst the Bays had some promising performances, such as Grima Jnr.

Tommy Logan got knocked out just in front of me and didn't look great ... good to see him move after 10-15 secs and hopefully just a big headache.

Anyone making predictions for the year on that game must be NostraMALdamus.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.
