North sign up with Coopers!

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Wedgie, does this mean the NAFC lads can longer raise that giant inflatable thing at Prospect, which the club's supporters won by voting for West End?

As for Dr Tims, it is actually Pale Ale beer. However, it isn't called Pale Ale when put in a can because the beer's quality in the can cannot equal the quality obtained in the bottle. That is why it is called Dr Tims, (named after Dr Tim Cooper).

Isn't Coopers in discussions with Glenelg atm too?

Yes - they are in talks with Glenelg as well which is unusual

The Coopers have links with Norwood through Glenn (although he did play for Sturt and eventually saw the light) and North through Verity who is a doctor out there

Not sure about the links at Glenelg

Maybe they should now release a Dr Verity's for Prospect ;)

lol, Im sure I can handle not having the inflatable thing (dont think we even used it after the initial time anyway, a waste of space) for having a decent beer.
Truth be known it was only a handful of supporters that knew how to rort the West End comp that won us that anyway!

It matters because the sponsorship is worth a lot of money to the SANFL and the SANFL clubs and the sponsor may not be so happy about North's new deal.

Well North has some right to make the best commercial decisions for it's business operations and despite all the stuff that has been written, maybe West End and the SANFL should have looked at supporting the clubs a little better with the "major" sponsorship deal so they didn't look "outside" which a number of clubs have raised in recent years. It is the SANFL and AAMI that benefit most out of the West End Sponsorship through products sold at Football Park.

BTW North will continue to stock and sell West End Products at Prospect and at it's two licensed venues and support the Leagues Beer sponsor at the same time. The Northern Tavern has been selling Coopers and many other rival West End products in it's bars and the bottle shop ever since we aquired the lease and there hasn't been any stink about that? North couldn't turn it's back on a sponsorship from Coopers which is far better than the deal we get via the SANFL West End Sponsorship.

Wow, the best of both worlds, only club to stock both West End and Coopers, why would you go to any other ground? :D

Stop Press:

North and Norwood will not be allowed a home final this year due to their sponsorship arrangements. Their home finals will be played in Perth..............

Perth would be a more attractive option than Adelaide Oval or Footy Park. Im all for it.

West End also have poured coin into grassroots footy for years and the SANFL affiliated leagues might feel the pinch if Lion decide that the sponsorship will be pulled back in anyway.

I would imagine those at SANFL head office wouldn't be overly happy with this though.

Well the West End sponsorship hasn't been the same since SA Brewing was sold to Lion Nathan in any case. If the league was so concerned why would they allow Lion Nathan to sell their interstate products alongside West End then?

Whether North has that right might depend on the contract between Lion Nathan and the SANFL.
The SANFL clubs, combined, benefit just about as much as the SANFL do from the arrangement so if North's sponsorship puts that 'dividend' at risk this will become a big issue, for the clubs, the SANFL and Lion Nathan.

North will still sell West End, the fact is this Japanese owned company wants to dictate what we sell at our ground in South Australia where the Adelaide owned company is willing to share. The Japs can go **** themselves, its free enterprise in Australia.
The way North fans drink they'd probably still sell more West End than half of the clubs that sell it exclusively anyway. ;)
I certainly wouldn't go to a pub that doesn't offer me a good variety, in the tough economic climate out there footy clubs should be able to provide variety as pubs do, we don't live in a Communist state!

Hmm North being painted the bad guys again yet I can't recall this much fuss re Norwood having Coopers as a major sponsor and supplier of beer in direct competition to the SANFL's deal with West End. Norwood supporters on here might be able to shed more light on that?

That sponsorship didn't seem to hurt the SANFL - West End deal otherwise why would it have stood so long?

The SANFL and West End should have been more competitive re matching any sponsorship proposals from it's rivals but as usual the SANFL Executive has shown it's apathy towards the SANFL and it's clubs except now where Lion Nathan have obviously complained to them. Perhaps Lion Nathan should question the people supposedly in charge of the SANFL and it's interests instead of the SANFL Exec taking the easy option and point the blame at a club(s) for trying to improve their financial bases?

There is much more behind the "politics" of this "Beer" issue than what is being reported selectively in the 'Tiser.

Perhaps a bit over the top. Lion Nathan contribute a huge amount to football in SA through sponsorhip and incentives. If I was head of Lion Nathan I would like to see a return on that investment, which is jeopardised by having to compete with another brewer. It depends how much North get from the West End sponsorship, as you can't expect a big handout from Lion Nathan and then turn around and sell Coopers.

Still, I'm looking forward to having a Dr Tim's at Prossy!

I'm sure you're right about there being much more to this than meets the eye, otr, but I'm not sure that all the problem lies with the SANFL yet again.

I have no opinion on this matter, as I don't know the facts, but on the surface it does seem another move by the North Board to thumb their noses at the SANFL, a trend that's been noticeable recently.

I'd be interested in hearing the facts from you.

PS: Any other news from Prospect of interest?

If you have no opinion on the matter then why have a crack at North? Where was another move recently as you put it that we thumbed our nose at the SANFL? Surely you can't mean the Port merger vote???

And the Beer issue is not all the SANFL fault, never said it was. You can portion some blame to Lion Nathan if you want to get political.

Coopers were Norwood's major sponsor for about 5 years IIRC, before transitioning to having the naming rights for the Parade - ie Coopers Stadium. There's also been Coopers Hill at the ground for many years.

If you consider it carefully, you will notice that the Coopers Branding and Marketing Strategy is all oriented towards grass roots activity. They don't usually go for the $$$ outlays on being the major sponsor of major events or icons. We dont have the Coopers Adelaide 500, the Coopers Tennis International etc. We do see Coopers on tap at the Fringe, in University taverns and so forth.

On that basis, it's not unusual to see them sponsoring individual clubs rather than the league. I suspect West End sponsor the SANFL in part because Lion Nathan are part of the AFL world - not necessarily for any other philanthropic reasons.
