Every other club has done it tough for extended periods at least once in their history but Port Adelaide.
Why feel sorry for them now they are going through a tough patch.
They need to deal with it like everyone else has and wait for the return to normal service that happens when your cycle has finished.
If a club that can finish bottom for 8 years or a club with the history of SOuth Adelaide can survive, I'm sure Port can IF they really want to.

very well said Smithy, it's something i've thought for a while with this. I don't feel sorry for them, but if possible, in a reasonable way, it should be rectified. Where it's getting blurred is that we're confusing Power with P.A.M and everyone has been for over 10 years now. So now that both clubs are verging on being broke we have a problem. Many SANFL clubs have been thru this sort of crap and now it's port's turn, however if Power is allowed to go down it has major ramifications to the SANFL as a whole.
Let's face it, the premise for PAFC to enter the "AFL" (a joke in itself), is now entirely flawed and the whole platform/foundation of it's submission to the SANFL/AFL at the time has now been found out to be based on grandiose bigheadedness and navel gazing. A classic case of a big fish in a small pond, now trying to be a bigger fish.
YOU ****** UP, IT FAILED, YOU PUT YOURSELF AHEAD OF YOUR MATES, AND NOW YOU'RE NEXT TO ****** WITHOUT YOUR MATES.
I really wonder if the same concern would go out for any other SANFL club?
If the answer is no then what are we so concerned for, let them eat their own...that's what magpies do, and that's exactly what they are doing and have done.
As I've said before,
BED- MAKE IT-SLEEP IN IT- SHIT IN IT- SLEEP IN IT-SUFFER!

Just to add. I don't think it would be any different in any other circumstance. i.e.-
-if port entered the AFL as a sole entity, without an SANFL team. Supporters would've felt sold out.
-if Port had've entered the AFL when they 1st tried back in 1990, they would've been hated even more and had even less attendence to games.
'PAFC don't want any advantages in the SANFL. It would only take away from any achievements we earned.'

There should not have been a port in the SANFL.
And the AFL Port should wear the prison bar jumper except when play ing collingwood to shut eddie up!!

Sorry guys thats just my view.

Reality if that had happened 10 yrs ago even my eagles may have struggled pretty sure we had 500 members back then.

But I stand by my view just one port in the afl wearing the prison bar jumper!!!

So if Golden Grove were to Join the SANFL, they could maintain their colours of Blue, Green & Yellow?

Do Golden Grove play in a competition that for the majority of its history was of a comparable standard as the SANFL? And if yes, was that competition suddenly out bought by the SANFL and given a status a couple of pegs lower than it once held? If yes to both of those questions, and if Golden Grove were a club that held a massive part of what would theoretically be quite a glorious history then I would be among the first to make a case for why they should be allowed to wear their current colours, whatever they may be.
It's a little bit like how Ken Farmer was shunned by the initial AFL hall of fame. I guess those royal immortals that wore the big V and reckon they are the be all and end all of footy thought that 100 goals a season for 10 seasons was only possible because the SANFL is to the AFL what amatuers is to us.
Often when you have your Collingwood hat on you take a shit on SANFL footy Punk. Think about it!

I am of the same opinion about the Blues. Which is one reason why I don't fault Port so much for what they are trying to do in the AFL.
They are one of us. Born is the SANFL over a hundred years ago. If things had continued as they were things would have been peachy and I could go on hating them with every inch of vitriol of possess. But a ******* monster from across the border came over and once the WAFL threw their arms in the air and submitted it was only a matter of time before we were also going to be swallowed by that same monster. In fact with each passing year we were steadily growing weaker, it was only by our extreme parochialism that we retained players like MacIntosh, McDermott, A and D Jarman Tregenza etc... In time players of such quality would not have played so much SANFL anyway.
I don't blame Port for what has happened to the SANFL for reasons stated above.
But once the Vics shat on us and suddenly we had "one team for all South Australians" it began feeling like it was official that the SANFL was less than second rate to the VFL all along. One of our clubs taking it up to them, even if the competition is manufactured, contrived and plastic like today's AFL, is an argument against that perception that the SANFL was second rate all along IMO.

I'm starting to feel this way myself. I've been keen for them to be profitable because it helps footy at all levels and I hate seeing any club die but watching the garbage being posted on BF makes me not care any more. If they go under, so be it.

They wouldn't have shed a tear for us back in 1995.

True. I Didn't experience much grief by Port fans back in the day we faced the axe.
Don't read BF, perhaps it'd be too much to ask you to regurgitate what's on there, but Port fans can be their own (and their club's) worst enemies sometimes.
I believe we were forged from a different steel though. In view of the greater good, SANFL minus Port isn't such a good equation IMO.

Indeed they didn't.
I still remember the comments directed at sturt at a few games back then by magpies supporters in the mid 90's.
They couldn't of cared less about us.
Port don't know how to do it tough, that's the problem.
Deal with it or **** off as far as I'm concerned.

No it's not but if they cant be saved then thats that.

I'd be interested to see if any of the Power fans that haunt big footy would have the balls to head down to Alberton on match day and tell people they want the club to die.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

What a load of BS theri- my stance is independent of my support for Collingwood, it would be the same no matter what.
If North Adeliade entered the AFL, I would not expect to keep the Red & White colours, as Sydney already have them.
Think logically theri, your pro-SANFL/anti-Vic chip on your shoulder is becoming a boulder.

Even if they did merge is there any reason the SANFL team couldn't retain the Magpies jumper or do the Power think futher exposure of their brand is more important than over 100 years of tradition? Or would it be a criteria someone else imposes?

Booney wrote:Agreed, keep the two on field operations as is but merge the two off field operations to give both the best possible opportunity to survive.

Marketing and Admin alone could save $100k's per year in saved wages and ultimately the marketing department are governed by the on field performances to some extent. Get the teams winning, I dont care how attractive the game style is ( see St.Kilda 2009 ) although I admit the more attractive Geelong,Adelaide and Bulldogs' ( Central and WB ) style of play would help get bums on seats, winning is the answer, for both teams.

Gets some wins under the belt, sponsors get on board.

Although not in anyway a direct result of the Global Financial Crisis there could not be a worse time to publicly be putting the hand out to the SANFL and trying to find sponsors. The whole business sector is surprised at the relatively low impact the GFC had on Australia and many are tightening their belts in expectation of a tough 2010.

The merger of off field operations would lead to many problems - the least of which is the twinning of the clubs in an administrative sense - if administrations are twinned why not medical and football department staff? this would also save money?

Focus needs to be on separate clubs for it to be effective - eg queries regarding memberships for port magpies need to focus on the magpies - merged departments naturally look at pushing the products of the merged entities ie the magpies and power - thus enabling the magpies to take advantage of the leverage that afl provides. What's then to stop Norwood approaching Adelaide to take over their administrative roles in order to save money?

Business executives need to focus on their own product - could a ceo of the power effectively push the magpie brand? do recruiting staff count as administrative if they''re unpaid - and sure as eggs, any sort of linkage between the two would provide impetus for a merger between all aspects of the club using the logic of why have just one part of the clubs merged - wouldn't it make more sense to have them all merged?

Yes, business may be bad for the Magpies but isn't as much about business decisions that went wrong rather than any fundamental problem with the club? Don't the Magpies still have membership that sits comfortably around the middle of the sanfl? Aren't their crowds reasonable? If its a problem stemming from the entry conditions such as the assumption of Alberton and its clubrooms by the Power perhaps the sanfl could loan money to the magpies with agreeance of the other clubs) to acquire an ongoing revenue stream - or perhaps the magpies can tough it out much like sturt, norwood and north had to before righting their revenue streams?

Either way, merging the power and port magpies only makes sense if the other clubs then allow power's reserves to be the magpies which then means that adelaide should be offered the same facility. This then breeds a whole host of other problems.
