The turnup of 2153 yesterday made it

- A total over the 10 home games of 20,025 .. the first time the club has broken the 20,000 home game barrier since moving all home games there in 1996.

- The 4th successive season that the Panthers have recorded an increase in home game attendances,

2003 - 1505 per home game
2004 - 1656 per home game
2005 - 1530 per home game
2006 - 1768 per home game
2007 - 1901 per home game
2008 - 1931 per home game
2009 - 2003 per gome game

Given the general lack of wins 4 straight years of increases is an excellent effort.

Surely more a reflection of the opposition supporters travelling than South supporters increasing their numbers?

Odd comment.

You could say that about an increase in home crowd numbers for any club then

Was one of the better turn outs from South supporters yesterday I thought.

Your comment was nothing more than a cheap shot and you know it. A little credit to those South of Anzac Hwy who follow the Panthers and to the Panthers for managing to get more people through the gates.

*Port fan defending South? *

Cheap shot and I know it??? I queried the original post in good faith based on the fact that most games against South in recent years at Noarlunga have attracted far more of the opposition supporters than the home supporters - that was certainly the case when North played them earlier in the year. I would bet quite confidently that would be the case with most teams if not all this year that have visited Noarlunga as up until Sat they had only won 1 game - hardly the basis to think they are drawing bigger crowds themselves!

So you can stop trying to work out what I am supposedly thinking or inferring. Lucky I didn't decide to take a cheap shot at you but it woudln't have passed the mods standards to be honest.

I think it is due to the fact that South have been very ordinary & fickle opposition supporters go there more readily, knowing that there side is going to win.

Our captain's last home game. Enough reason for many south supporters to make the effort and come.

No arguement about South supporters turning up for Torney's last game but would doubt South had more supporters than Port at the game yesterday - doubt if that has ever happened in a Port vs. south match played anywhere! Plus my arguement was based on Phil's post which is over the whole year.

P.S. What centurion posted certainly applies.

I think the fact they played Port twice at Noarlunga this year as well as the fact they've never played more games there than this year might have a wee bit to do with any small glitches in crowd figures.

"Surely" .... I don't think so.

There are numerous factors that contribute to any crowd at an SANFL game.
- Weather conditions
- Scheduling (ie clash with ABC TV coverage, Crows / Power)
- Form of both sides / attractivness of matchup
- Size of supporter bases.
- Promotional activity undertaken by home club
- Access and ammenties at the venue.
to name a few.

Unless you survey people coming in no one knows exactly, that's the joy of marketing entertainment.

The one "sure" fact is that South home crowds that seven years back averaged just over 1500 are now averaging 2000, after four years of steady, sustained growth. It's hard to say that the Panthers admin have not played a part in that, especially when you observe the game day entertainment put on and the Super Sunday promotions that are organised (last Sunday was the auskick day from memory).

This growth is matched by SAFC membership that sat around 1000 for many years, went up to 1550 in 2007 and is now over 1600 this season. (unless you are saying that "surely" other clubs are also responsibile for gowth in Panther memberships)

BTW - They played both Port & Norwood at home twice in 2007 as well.

As for the more matches comment
- that should not effect on a per game average
- each club has had 10 home games allocated for 3 seasons now, this is not a first.

Phil, can you provide overall SANFL crowd figures for this year and let us know how many (if any) are needed to attend the last round to equal or surpass last year?

Your argument now is South member numbers are responsible for the increase - sorry missed that bit in your original post! So you would bet that South supporters have outnumbered the opposition at Noarlunga this year and in past years?

Philm my more matches comment was in regard to the total figure (over 20k) comment and in regard to allocated home games I thought in previous years some clubs might have had home games at Adelaide Oval, country venues or possibly even Thebby. Quite happy to be corrected though if there were no home games at those locations.
