Your SANFL Wish list for 2010

All discussions to do with the SANFL

It's just a park with a grandstand now:

mcp.php?i=main&mode=post_details&f=17&p=676734

Wish List? Well, if the SANFL can't make up a proper mini-league competition that would cost very little (no doubt sticking with the AFL Auskick plan), then nothing in here will happen.

I am planning to write to them with a list of suggestions as I have several of my own that I want to suggest, I am hoping that if enough good ideas can be suggested we can get them considered before the SANFL put together the draw for 2010. If they are looking at Playing matches before AFL games, which its fairly clear from here isnt wanted, lets give them some ideas that people do want that will get the results in that they are looking for to expand interest in the competition and increase its profits.

Anyway here is my list which I am working on.

1. Double Header Matches - Adelaide, Football Park, Thebarton, wherever.

2. Could the number of matches at Thebarton be increased from one to three?

3. More Friday night matches at the start of the SANFL Season when the weather is good.

4. The SANFL to consider spending some coin and to host and properly promote a Heritage round to coincide with the SA History Week. - Maybe to include a South vs Norwood match at Kensington Oval.

5. The Premier of the SANFL to get a go at the Premier of the WAFL as a part of the SANFL pre-season competition.

6. All SANFL clubs to host a match in their country area, perhaps half in 2010 and the other half in 2011.

Add away!

I don't wish any of these, except for number 3.

I'd like to see the finals double-header start later (12:30 is too early for a final) and the season's fixtures to make some sort of sense.

1. Hell yeah bring back country games. North vs. Central @ Port Pirie under lights would kick arse.

2. More night matches thanks very much. Nine neutral Fridays at AO plus the ones at Norwood isn't too much to ask, is it?

3. Put the night games at Elizabeth back up to four... maybe even a fifth could be approved.

4. A heritage round would be good. I love the throwback jumpers.

5. Would the TasSL be good enough to face the SANFL?

Can't see this happening during the Royal Show as they have too much on in the main arena area.

More Eagles home games played at Thebarton Oval. Woodville Oval is a hopeless venue for attracting big crowds, always has been and always will be. I am very annoyed that the Eagles have programmed only one match at Thebarton this year.

A State Game to be guaranteed.

I like the idea of a country round, but I'm not sure what the ABC would think of that (or radio broadcasters). That would be great for a long weekend, eg Easter. The SANFL could do what the Tour Down Under does, and invite country towns to "bid" for games - not necessarily by offering dollars, but by offering a good venue, good service/hospitality, and a good turnout from country folk.

Round 1 to be free entry for everyone. Promote "the real deal"! Promote the round through schools to encourage kids to drag their parents along. Every kid who goes in round 1 gets a free ticket for an adult for Rounds 8 or 9 for example - ie a choice of two rounds so that the team with a bye in either round is not disadvantaged.

Ask the SANFL to count the kids/free tickets who attend a game, so that real attendance figures can be captured.

A better website that provides accurate and timely scores, game statistics and so forth. Also, give the fourth game that misses out on a commercial broadcast via TV or radio, to aspiring commentators to broadcast by live stream over the internet.

Fund an SANFL footy show on TV once a week for an hour. (A bit like the old C31 show).

They do that already mate. (Well every red coat whoops make that blue coat or whatever it is these days I take the kids by does anyway, when I drive into grounds they always make sure they know many kids I have in the back for counting the crowd, similarly when we walk through a gate I notice they click the counter over for the kids as well as adults)

Yeah but how many times do the children/teenagers walk in and out of the gates throughout the day, im sure they can't remember every child, so they get recounted.

When we were younger we use to be back and forth from the Elizabeth Center, Hungry Jacks, McDonalds and always had different teenage mates with us each time we entered through the different gates. We were probably counted up to 4-5 times a game and just our little 'possie' could have had up to 30 kids in it.

Ahh those were the days when the footy didn't matter.

More night games.

Team that finished last , has the bye in the last rd the next year.

NO Sanfl league games to be played at Footy Pk as a curtain raiser for AFL.

My idea, which I have posted on here before, would be to have a full country round once a year and rotate the "home" zones the next year, so every team has a game in its' zone every second year. Give South the bye in these rounds, but let them retain their Encounter Bay game at Easter every year.

Just curious, what would this achieve?

THink of the exposure the SANFL could get if they were to play a game at Wayville on a Friday night when the Royal Show is on...

It is a suggestion CK has been pushing for a while now and I think it would be great. I would think that it would probably work best with Sturt (of course) playing the Bays, thus ensuring a good turn out I reckon.

It's an idea that I've thrown out there a few times and not sure how many negatives there would be for a club looking at it. Rather than playing in front of 2,500 - 2,800 fans, why not take the game to an atmosphere where over 35,000 could pass through the gates throughout the full day, and offer them the chance to see SA's premier football competition while having tea, snacks etc in the Main Arena? It would mean starting all equestrian competition, as well as Supercar etc events the day after, to ensure that the ground is not chopped up during the day.

Saw the point raised about reconfiguring the ground, not sure how that would come into it. I remember someone posted the dimensions of Wayville before - which did not include the gravel track - and it is comparable to existing grounds. It would mean temporary fencing certainly around the perimeters, but this should not create a problem.

If the SANFL and clubs are serious about exposing the brand to a youth audience, why not take the brand direct to the single biggest attended event over a multi day period (therefore, excluding the Christmas Pageant) in SA and put it right in front of them? Whether it be South v West under lights, or Central v Glenelg, any club involved could surely only benefit from the idea over time. Have membership options for the following year open, and allow the other seven clubs to have booths around the perimeter with players available for autographs/coaching clinics, and both radio stations taking the call of the game, to allow them to expose their brand there also.

There are plenty of positives with the idea. If you look hard enough, like anything, of course there are negatives also - but if every idea was knocked on the head for negatives, nothing would ever move forward.

on wayville during the show over two days have 8 teams play a round makes sense. For this to work you would need to have the turf replaced from the guy that do telstra stadium. People will watch the SANFL and it would be great for the clubs. and for the team with the bye have them there to sign autographs and even and internal trial game or something.
