I don't like the idea of going to watch my SANFL club play and them not being the main attraction of the day. It feels insulting to me, though I'd like to hear what the players think of the idea. To me it'd be like The Smiths playing support to Human Nature.

I think it's a terrible idea (and I have both Centrals and Adelaide season tickets).

These days very few people are actually inside AAMI until about 15-20 minutes before the game (trying to avoid alot of the 19th man gimmicks and Tilli the awful pre-game announcer), so instead of playing in front of a few thousand passionate people in the intimate surrounds of a suburban ground, they'd be playing in front of about 10 patrons and a few orange coats in what would be a stale AAMI Stadium.

So whilst it may be convenient for me to see both games at once, it failed in the past, and it will fail in the future.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

They've tried this on a couple of occasions before and it has failed. Being a Crows and Eagles member and season ticket holder it doesn't worry me. I enjoy the concept of an SANFL league game as a curtain raiser. Though questions do have to be asked will you have to purchase an Adelaide or Port game day ticket to gain entry for your SANFL club game or will the SANFL package a gameday ticket into the SANFL clubs season tickets.

How many games will be played as curtain raisers and will each SANFL club be given = opportunities ?

That's a bit harsh mate - I happen to be a Crows supporter and member as well as an Eagles supporter and member. I happen to be very passionate about both incl the SANFL as a whole. After all the Adelaide Crows were set up as a composite side representing the 10 SANFL clubs mate. I believe there would be more Crows supporters passionate about the SANFL rather than Power after all that teal scum at Alberton only care about one thing and that is themselves.

I reckon this is all about the sanfl bailing the power out and cutting deals between the afl and sanfl to get more dosh......

it won't work......

as for bagging the crows and afl supporters remember they come to see the main game......

I bet the power supporters would love to the magpies play before them......

a second game of sanfl is a bonus to some (supporters) or a bore to others (other club supporters, or people with no interest)

persoanlly I liked watching the sanfl before the afl.........

Leigh Whicker is currently on 5AA confirming that it is being looked at and they are currently considering how certain logistical hurdles like starting of game times and ticketing can be overcome.

This is just plain dumb, i can maybe see why they would do it (possibly bring sanfl fans to games and introduce sanfl football to afl fans) but it's not in the best interest of the SANFL competition imho. Our comp is getting good crowds, interest is up, leave it as is please. Did he mention why this might happen?

Reckon you're spot on ccl ... this has got the stinken Power's fingerprints all over it.
If Leigh Whicker thumbs his nose at the hardcore SANFL fan and programs games as curtain raisers to prop up the Power scum, it will be his biggest mistake in office in 25 years.
Find another way Leigh ... loyal SANFL fans deserve better than this.

It wouldn't surprise me if the motivation behind this idea is to fill the void of the 10,000 or so Crows fans that are a no show to each game & the countless others that don't attend Port games.
If it works (and I doubt it will) that will result in a better $ return from each AFL game and make it that much easier for the SANFL to sort out a better stadium deal for both the Power & the Crows.
I honestly can't see that it is something being driven by the SANFL clubs as I struggle to see what benefit they can get out of the exercise.
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

A good idea

But then they should consider QAFL games in Brisbane, NSWAFL games in Sydney, VFL games in Melbourne, and WAFL games in Perth
But yes, it was a pretty pointless comment wasn't it?!

Leigh Whicker said that SANFL club CEO's have asked to talk about this, and they want it

I can't imagine how this could happen without SANFL supporters being screwed over one way or another.

No, the team that represents all the SANFL teams is our state team.

I'm not keen for most of the reasons already stated. What did Leigh Whicker offer up as his rationale for this proposal? What are the perceived benefits that weren't realised when this used to be done?

This weekend is rivalry round in the SANFL and there is no AFL from the two Adelaide-based clubs. Why not charge the AFL club members an extra 5 bucks and throw in a extra game - ie "free" entry to rivalry round with the $$$ raised from the $5 'levy' going to the SANFL clubs (eg as "compensation" for losing crowd numbers for all these years)?

Instead of 20,000+ attending rivalry round we could get an extra 10,000 along. $5 x say 60,000 members between the two clubs (assuming there are about another 20,000 people with dual memberships) = $300,000 - which between 9 clubs = $33k each plus any ground revenue they get. Everyone's a winner!

(Just had a thought - do AFL club members already get free SANFL entry, or is it only those who are members of both Crows and Power?).

Back when ADelaide first came in and then Port came in, its not like there was a SANFL curtain raiser every week. From memory it was around two each or thereabouts.

The way Id price it:
SANFL Season Ticket- Free Entry
SANFL Home Match Ticket - Free Entry
Club Membership - $6
General Public - $15 up until 1/2 time, then full AFL ticket price.

Its gonna be harder to work out for Crows games as they sell out, so obviously its just a ticket into the ground as opposed to for a seat.

Or Club memberships could include this match as part of the price of the membership.

Using this years AFL fixture you could go something like:
R1: Port v Essendon / Sturt v South
R4: Adelaide v Geelong / Norwood v North
R11: Port v Fremantle / Glenelg v Port
R12: Adelaide v NM / South v WWT
R14: Port v Brisbane / Port v Sturt
R15: Adelaide v Fremantle / West v Centrals
R18: Port v Hawthorn / Norwood v West
R19: Adelaide v Collingwood / WWT v Glenelg
R22: Port v NM / Centrals v North

Bays have made Queen's Birthday Monday a big success in last few years with big crowds. Why put a solid fixture like that on before a horrendous Port v Freo game? This whole idea is making my blood boil.
