I think that's true of a lot of these stories. They set their goals on the AFL from a young age and if that dream dies some seem to struggle to maintain the motivation and commitment the SANFL still demands. It's either AFL or nothing.
Or they are broken down physically and possibly mentally. Sometimes it seems the deterioration is greater than they believed it was when the decided to keep on playing SANFL. I think the AFL clubs see the writing on the wall before they do.
