I think we'll all wait until more than 9 or 10 games in season 1 to judge that.

Some of the key factors that influence performances of a jurisdiction in AFL U18s National Championships include:

1 - population base of U18 males in each jurisdiction (eg this year very roughly there would be about 18,500 18yo males in Vic Metro, about the same in Vic Country, 15,700 in WA and about 11,000 in SA) - that is a significant inbalance between the traditional football States.
2 - cyclical issues (ie just a particularly good/bad batch of players - previous year or two's U16 National Carnivals are often a good indicator of this)
3 - quality of coaching
4 - the overall program (eg when do they get together and for how long)
5 - travel/draw

The extent of the weighting of any or all of these on the performance of the jurisdiction in any given Carnival is debatable though.

Suffice to say though that WA have a distinctive advantage in relation to point 1 above and relating to point 2 - it was forecast that this batch of SA U18s, based on recent SA U16s groups, was not expected to be a strong one but next year is.

I would also add that AFL recruiters have recently expressed to the AFL their concern at the current U18 Carnival format in relation to Div 2 sides playing Div 1 sides - they say it affects the draftability of Div 2 players.

Just found out young Menzel who was named on a half forward flank is my cousin's son. :)
It seems everyone in my family has or had football ability except for me! :(

He wouldnt have mate, I havent caught up with my cousins for over 25 years and never met their kids. Tell him Im Great Auntie Joy's son or to ask his parents who cousin Anthony is. ;)

Im not even sure which cousin he's a son of but assume it would be Peter or Trevor and not Debbie.

Ill ask mum next time I talk to her.

Should have went with your hunch mate, according to the SANFL web site, Daniel is listed as being from Golden Grove. It could be possible that he played some junior footy at Eastern Park at some stage ???

With your "blonde" hair Wedgie, you could be related to Alby from Norwood.
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

I coached his brother Chris a few years back and he was a Golden Grove boy then, probably about 6 years ago now I reckon.

Was just over Visy Park for a look as my hotel is directly across the road.
Didn't realise there was a game on until I walked inside. SA U18's v whoever wears a lightish blue guernsey.
I didn't gt to stay long as i'm getting ready for the Carlton match tonight but I got some good pics of the young lads which I will post on Sunday when I get home.
They looked pretty good from what I saw, didn't see a scoreboard though.

NSW/ACT, if we can't beat them, the whole junior development and elite player pathway needs to be reviewed.... ;)
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
