True, the members can also vote again accordingly the next time around, yet the damage is well and truly done by then....

Any word as to when the SANFL are going to confirm selling out and going straight to the U/18 Comp. I thought it was meant to be this week.

Allegedly the latest count is 5 Clubs for an U/18's Comp - 4 Clubs against it.

Surely with such a close call the SANFL could not possibly go ahead with this set up. Once they go U/18's they wont go back to 17's & 19's. If the clubs themselves are unsure as to what is best for themselves and the comp then one would think that we shouldn't make any rash decisions.

It has to be U18 & U16 why not conform? Move to the real world. SANFL is too much dominated by backward thinkers but I feel David Hutton (PAMFC) will change that.

I'm confident that the League will think about it and find lots of reasons why they should do nothing.

That's their normal operating procedure.

Why would Central be against it, they are last in both 17s and 19s.

Because we focus on preparing players for league football. Having the two age groups serves that purpose best, in the clubs opinion.

The results in 17's and 19's are not relevant.

Maybe centrals think that it is an important to their clubs development of players for years to come and the immediate results are not of great importance.

You would have to ask them what their thinking is.

Thanks for the sentiments Soj and I think I know where you are coming from, but realistically my lot have done 2/5ths of bugger all since 1990, certainly compared to Centrals and we certainly haven't had the same amount of success in terms of spoons as Sturt....

The Eagles also prepare players for league football, as you might know with a couple on AFL rookie lists and Stewart playing for PAP. It reflects alot about a Club if ALL 4 grades win on any weekend, even more so if all 4 are in the 5.

Yes, it is nice if all 4 grades win, just like it is nice if the Under 15's win the state championships.

But the development of the players is far more important - if we lose a 19's game because the players are trying and stuffing up new elements of the game plan then we are a happy club. Some years it all works well and we finish higher in the juniors and that's a bit of icing.

Hey Tassie Medallist

The current League side has 6 lads from the Southeast playing - all of whom progressed through the 17's and 19's - the ressies have a high number of lads from the local area who also came through the system - Grosser, Sundquist, Button, Kellock, Basir etc etc (actually too many to go through)

Grosser is the classic example - with an Under 18 system - may well have been lost to the system - now a big chance to play League footy

I have a few thoughts on the U18's issue, and im not sure if these have already been mentioned - sorry if they have.

My opinion is that generally if someone hasnt made it to the League or Ressies team by the age of 18-19, then they probably are unlikely to ever - obviously there are exceptions to this rule. If the SANFL changed to a U18's only system, then the Reserves competition could basically become an unofficial U20's comp, this would then push the 22,23 & 24 year olds out of the Reserves, sending them back to Amateur or Country clubs. This would in turn, boost the standard of these leagues. Many SANFL clubs may already do this, but not being involved with one, i dont know.

Im not really for or against getting rid of the U17/19's, but surely there must be quite a few positives for changing to U18's.

It may actually force the SANFL clubs to work with their local SAAFL/SFL, and zoned country clubs better than they currently do.

My understanding is that it will come down to money, if the AFL throw enough money at it, then clubs will go with it.

The problem i see is that many kids will not be exposed to the opportunity to play SANFL football.

Clubs like Port Adelaide who have invested money into the country zones will be severly affected. If it goes to U18 then they will have squads of 40 or so and because of the age group only 4 or 5 of these players will be from the bush. You cant have 10 or 15 kids on your list and have them sitting 400km away!!!!

The SANFL will only win from merging the U17s and U19s into a U18s comp.
Let's hope that those clubs voting against it will put the game ahead of their own inept understanding of the game and let the game and comp progress as it should.
Im sure all members of those clubs keeping the game at a stalemate will make their feelings heard.
Let's hope so anyway.
