Just tuned in for a bit then...

They were talking to Brett Backwell and Heath Lawry, reviewing the Dogs v Bays game...

Obviosuly they spoke about the umpiring on the show and it was mentioned that at one stage, Tony Dey paid a 25m penalty to the Bays for what ever reason then DHead Dey paid another one because HE ran into Thommo and fell over ??!!

If that is true, it's an absolute EFFING JOKE, for god sake, I saw Dey go A over T about 3 other times earlier in the day.

Good to see Warren Partland single out that absolute WANKER Rowston and DINGBAT Dey as putting in absolute shockers with the whistle.
Gees, I hope Shane harris was there watching that game, he SHOULD be embarrased by the effort his men put up yesterday...

I've said it before, but give me the experienced, consistant WILLIAMS and PFIEFFER any day of the week. At least they let the game flow...

Listened to the morning sports show this morning on 1197 and a caller rang in about the incident I mentioned above with Tony Dey backpedalling into Thommo (who had his back to the umpire and the play heading off to the next contest) and that being the cause of the second follow up 25m penalty... ABSOLUTE BULLSHIT that Dey paid that, no idea of COMMON SENSE...

Well done to the caller (I can't remember his name) but I must say I was a bit annoyed at Chris Kendall who basically went into bat for the umpires saying Paul Thomas has be aware of where the umpires are. FFS, are you kidding me Chris ? Yes, they need to have an awareness of not getting in the umps road when they back out of a ball up etc, but SURELY the sole objective of ANY footballer at ANY level is to get the footy and work as hard as they can to be at as many contests as possible.

Why is it Thommos fault that he was alert to the first 25m penalty paid and in turning inward to the direction of the end Glenelg was kicking to assess where the next contest will be, HE WAS RAN INTO BY UMPIRE DAY, not the other way round. Surely common sense would have prevailed and Tony would have apologised, got on with things and set the mark from the first 25 he paid. But no, like this morning's caller mentioned, he obviously got on his high horse and decided he didn't want to look like a DH for not at least looking over his shoulder before back pedalling and decided that he would be the one to make Thommo a SCAPEGOAT in true drama queen fashion.

Seriously though, although I know it will have no effect and the rubbish standard of SANFL umpiring will continue forever and a day, I really feel like emailing the SANFL and asking Shane Harris what his take of the men in white's performance was like at Hamra Homes on Saturday. A few weeks back, I had an interesting experience, sitting up in the stands at Richmonnd for the West v Centrals game and I was right up the back next to the club statisticians and Shane Harris and his umpire review panel were right up behind my left shoulder.

Let me just say, it is interesting to over hear some of the panels thoughts and Shane's little assessments in particular as each decision is made. I couldn't believe the amount of times he would be saying, wrong decision from this ump, that one wasn't in the right position, missed call here, inappropriate decision made there... It was almost farsical. From memory, Tim Pfieffer was one of the league umps doing that game in particular and I must say, Shane had nothing but praise for Mr Pfieffer's performance, decison making and positioning.

I have really gone full circle on my opinion of umpires now, I used to hate when we would get the likes of now retired Craig Dodridge, Richard Williams or Tim Pfieffer officiating Dogs games. Now I plead that we get the more experienced whistle blowers as they don't seem to be as pig headed in wanting to replicate the over officiated shamozzle like the AFL umpies do. I cringe now when ever I hear 3 names called for our games... COLIN ROWSTON - been shocking and terribly inconsistant for last 5 years, how the hell didi he get AFL games ?, TONY DEY - Started off young and was ok, but as he gets older, thinks he is the all that, but is just pig headed and CHRIS CAREY - just has little man syndrome and doesn't get the basics right and misses the always seems to miss the obvious ones...

AHHHHH, I'M SO FRUSTRATED BY THE STANDARD OF UMPIRING IN THE SANFL. IT'S A JOKE !!??

*sigh*

read law 15.5 (c) and law 16.7 (b) and you'll finally undersand that Dey was 100% right in how he applied those laws.

However personally I only ever paid 15.5 (c) once, depite players making contact with me several times. Personally I don't like the law and tended to not pay it as it is a players game not an umpires game. Probably why I never went past A grade country footy as an umpire.

However, at state league level Tony Dey was 100% right in his interpretation in that instance and Chris Kendell 100% right in supporting the umpires.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

So you are saying then Tassie that if there is a law or rule in place to avoid something from taking place that isn't allowed to occur, then there can be no compassion a sense of reality and common sense applied by these rule enforcers then !!?? Okay, that's pretty sad then isn't it ??

Let's say your wife is at home and going into labour unexpectantly... It's the middle of the night and there is no traffic around so you whisk her in the car and head down Anzac Highway getting up to speeds of say 90km in the 60 zone. A copper who is sitting in the McDonalds car park having a coffee, sees you speedng past and proceeds to pull you over. You immediatley explain the situation pointing to your wife laying across the back seat about to give birth and screaming.
The copper is a REALIST, has COMPASSION and USING COMMON SENSE advises you to get her to the hospital as quickly you can and he will give you an escort up ahead.

Now you are TECHNICALLY breaking a law and a Law Enforcer is letting you get away with it because they are a REALIST and have a grasp on what they are doing... Pitty the umpires have no idea mate and this instance, we are just going to have to agree to disagree I'm afraid, as do I with Chris Kendall's opinions this morning.

Because I think there's been enough info in this thread that is not relevant.
