Well what do you know, I have another addition to my ever increasing list...

6. INSIDE FOOTBALL : Vol. 38, No.8, Issue 1221 - Page 34 : SANFL Wrap

For those who are a little unfamiliar with this publication, it’s a newspaper style magazine, released weekly. It mainly covers the AFL but it also has some good coverage of all the other State League competitions, as well as a bit of country footy. It’s a really good read and I’ve been a fan of it for the last 5 or 6 years now.

They allocate 1 page per State League competition and each page will generally have a little feature article on something, a player interview ( this week it is a really good one on our very own Adam Switala ) then an individual evaluation of the teams performance from the week before. Peter Argent is generally the Journalist for the SANFL page and he does a really good in my opinion. I am sure many of us are familiar with Peter’s work in many forms of media. In fact, this weeks page also gives a great plug to the "2008 SA Footy Media Guide" which is a good read in itself and was actually co-produced by Peter and another fellow media man, big Phil Herden.

The individual team assessments down the bottom are generally pretty accurate and usually start of with a little 3 or 4 word play on words to lead into the article. For example, with Ian Perrie dominating, kicking 6 on the weekend Sturt’s article started off with “Perrie Perrie Good”. West Adelaide play their first game this week after having the round 1 bye so for them, it read “Fresh Bloods” and of course John “Jack” Cahill, now the coach at South Adelaide (with a surprise first up win over Glenelg) had their column starting with “Jack’s Back”.

I liked the Centrals one as well but this is where we find my latest addition to this list.

The Column started: “Another ‘Hoff ” and obviously had reference to “young” Leigh Westhoff’s resurgence of form against the Maggies last week. I actually thought he was a little bit unlucky not to get BOG. Anyway, within the actual column itself, one of the sentences went on to read “Among the best players was Leigh Westhoff, younger brother to Power listed forwards, Justin & Matthew.”

Younger brother, I don’t think so. He is actually the oldest as far as I knew, so I did my research and found out the following:

Matthew Westhoff DOB: 05/06/88 Age: 19
Justin Westhoff DOB: 01/10/86 Age: 21
Leigh Westhoff DOB: 11/02/85 Age: 23

Now, if my maths serves me correct, 23 is OLDER than 19 or 21 for that matter !!

I just wish these journos would do their research thoroughly before sending any thing to print. It’s not the first time this publication has got it wrong as well, it's really frustrating.

Anyway, I’ve now had another whinge and added number 6 to my list. Stay tuned for number 7, I’m sure it wont be too long now…

GO DOGGIES…

I thought some of the complaints of the SM were abit pedantic until I read yesterdays edition. In Warren Partlands write up of the Glenelg v Eagles game this paragraph was repeated 3 times at the end of the article, he was quoting Ron Fuller-
Quote
"One of the things we emphasised was to be competitive around the ball and we just did not have that"
End quote
Maybe repeating this 3 times is over emphasising things abit!
There was another interesting quote of Ron Fuller which I gather is correct-
"I wasn't as frustrated last week as I was annoyed. This week I was annoyed and frustrated"
Who'd be a coach?
Saying that I think Partland does a good job reporting on the SANFL and any bloke that tips Sturt to beat Centrals by 25-36 is all right by me. :D

He's a centrals supporter! Always tips against us as well (notwithstanding the fact he was pretty close on this occasion).

Haven't bought the thing in about 5 years, get far better info from this place.

Hold the press people, we have a new addition to my list, we are now up to NUMBER 7 !!

This latest media bungle was bought to my attention over on the Centrals forum. For those not aware, I'm pushing the same crusade on that forum as I am on here. Up until today, I didn't see it first hand but got a right old chuckle out of this one. Because I now live in Norwood, I only get the Eastern Courier which of course covers the Norwood & Sturt results. So I get the Old Lady, who lives in the North, to hang onto the Northern Messenger for me so I can then look at the write ups for Dogs games. Well, hold onto your hats people, we've got a beauty at number 7:

7. NORTHERN MESSENGER - Page 5: News (The Buzz) - Wednesday. April 2 2008

In amongst a few small little articles about "What's Happening" or "The Buzz" around the northern suburbs, Centrals most recent inductee into the 100 games club, Luke Cowan, had a nice piece congratulating him on his long, but hard fought achievement. It also speaks of how this was made a little harder, considering he had to overcome a shoulder reconstruction from last year. Correct information reported there. Well done, BUT that's where it all ends...

First of all there is a little inset picture with an arrow pointing at the face of the name listed, of course Luke Cowan. Ah ah, that's were it is soooo wrong !! The bloody picture is CLEARLY not Luke and is in actual fact, onballer Chad O'Sullivan !!! What a stuff up, it's a bloody joke !? To be honest, at first glance, I actually thought the pic looked like ex West Adelaide lad and current West Coast Eagles Premiership player, Beau Waters ? Small resemblance I reckon ?

Well ladies and gentleman, the fun doesn't stop there. The article then goes on to say that the milestone player "capped off a vintage performance with a goal in his side's 20 point win". Well what's wrong with that you ask, that's correct, Luke did kick a goal, I'm sure of it, you say... ???

You are correct, he did, but guess what the start of the last paragraph describes Cowan (6'6, 98kg) as :

A TOUGH MIDFIELDER !!! ?

A tough midfielder ?? Tough maybe yes, but I reckon Luke may have played 1 or 2 games in the ruck a few years back but that doesn't qualify you as a midfielder ?!! He's a forward, we all know that. Reading that made me laugh so much.. !!

Bloody hell, do these people know what the hell they are talking about ?!! What's even worse is this is the local community newspaper, the jouno's doing these stories should be in touch with the community and get their facts correct before printing them. I could kind of understand it was from the Advertiser, but come on guys at the Messenger, lift your game for god sake !!! ?

Wonder how long before I get this running tally into double figures ? Not too long, no doubt !! ?

M. Rucci has one saving grace, that is that there is only one daily paper in adelaide!
He used to write some interesting stuff about 5+ years ago but now, childish, vindictive, immature vitriol.

Thanks to some assistance from my newly recruited "field researchers" over at the Centrals forum, we have another addition to my ongoing list:

From: "Spot" on Centrals forum

Here's another.

Page 92 of today's (Thursday April 10) Advertiser, picture of Justin Westhoff tackling what the newspaper says is Ryan Williams, when it is in fact Daniel Boyle.

How many is that now, they just keep giving us ammunition!

Great work Spot, appreciate the help of others in this my ongoing crusade to show SOME people in the media how INCOMPETENT they are. Keep up the good work field researchers, it is much appreciated !!!

We now have a new entry in at 8, interestly it involves 2 young Centrals player, well 3 actually !!?

8. THE ADVERTISER - Page 92: "Faltering Forwards" Thursday April 10 2008

Had a quick read of this article late tonight (after a prick of a day at work !!) and thought it was well written, emphasising the lack of potency Port Power forwards have shown in the first three weeks. My initial thoughts were, naturally, that Chocco should drop Westty back to Centrals for just a few games (well actually 3 so he qualifies for finals !!?) to get a bit of form back.

It went onto to talk of the other struggling forwards and had little inset pictures of the players in mention with their stats comparison from 2007. The main picture was of young Justin at full stretch applying pressure through a strong diving tackle and the little 'descriptive' inset starts off well with an appropriate title of "Putting everything into it:". A very appropriate comment of the action captured by the photographer, listed underneath as Callum Robertson.

The caption goes onto to state that the tackle by Westty is on his fellow Centrals team mate, Ryan Williams. SORRY, WRONG... As I'm sure you can see yourselves, it IS NOT Mr Williams at all and is in actual fact, another Doggies listed player, in Port Rookie DANIEL BOYLE !!? Come on Advertiser, if you are going to write good articles, finish it off by knowing who the players are and listing them correctly, PLEASE PEOPLE.

The reason I mentioned the photographers name above is that it begs the question as to who is to blame for these BLATANTLY OBVIOUS errors or lack of knowledge. I'm interested in knowing who actually picks the players out of the snap shots and identifies them before going to print. Does the photography note who it is they have taken a shot of, then pass it onto the journo ? Maybe the so called "professional" gets the pic from the 'snapper' and then in their infinite wisdom make their judgement or assumption as to who the player is ? Or is it a case of a little bit from both ?

I would just have thought that if these guys are supposed to be the "experts", then surely they would know who the players are ? I know there are a lot of players in a "squad" these days and annually there are fresh and new faces, but all they have to do is look at the clubs web site or even the team photos the papers themselves release. Surely with todays technological advances the journos can use these resources as easy identification tools. Actually, don't go by the names in posters printed in the paper, they have proven to get these wrong in the past as well !! ?

Look forward to more entries in the coming days. The way things are going, I reckon a might be bringing up my "ton" by the end of the season !! Come on jounos, lift your bloody game !!?? I'm gonna keep posting these ERRORS and I will send it to them at the years end... !!!??

Big Phil, you really do need to ahhh, get a life.
I'm assuming you've never made a mistake at your office or toilet block or whatever the hell you do?
People make mistakes and as much as we all love the SANFL, it's now a second string league and we have to accept the fact that not everyone is as well known in the comp as they were 10 or 20 years ago. We should all be grateful of the coverage it gets rather than condemn the odd error that is made.
Try not to make this as pedantic and boring as Rooch's Scott Thompson ticker.
Move on.

Harry, I think you need to jump back up onto your horse and ride off into the sunset !!! And by the way, I reckon I've probably got more of a life than you do and probably will ever have... !!!

I understand what you are saying to a small degree, but totally disagree with a couple of you're already repeated points you have tried to make, with not much success mate...

Before I do that, let me just say that I simply do this for a little bit of light hearted banter mate. I don't work for the ACCC and I'm not going to "dob in" the media outlets for misleading information or anything pedantic like that. If you were on this forum a bit more regularly you would see that I have been getting stuck into them on a regular basis BUT I'm only trying to make a point of how annoying it is more than anything. The vast majority of respondants have agreed with my points "Mr Ed" so let it go. I reckon I've changed my mind now though and suggest you can get back down off your "high horse" and go post an opinion on Glenelg or something else where the real serious people are wanted for comment. \:D/

I've had a very similar response from someone else in the past who turned out to be a journalist themselves. I've got my suspicions that you may be one as well hey Harry ? Yes, as I answered before, I do make mistakes myself at work, but my point was if I do make a mistake, I learn from it and try to make sure it doesn't happen again. Also, my mistakes are seen by thousands and thousands of people on a dialy basis are they ??!! No they are not !!? Now I only started this post about three weeks ago ,so that my friend, is more than the odd mistake. [-X

Hang on a minute, I'm sorry, I might be a bit over the top there. I guess I should say thanks for the feedback. Nonetheless, I think it isn't really necessary and I reckon you should just just stick to your equestrian or whatever horsey thing it is that you do and let me do my thing !! You can keep reading the boring posts about Scott Thompson, enjoy them instead if you aren't interested in reading mine. :butthead:

Do us a favour and you stop complaining mate, I think that you need to head back to your local toilet block and crawl back into that tiny hole you burrow out of when ever you want to get stuck into someone. Get over yourself mate... :toimonster:

I hate it when the council get it wrong and don't grade the right roads, i hate it when a waitress doesn't put gravy on my schnitzel like i ordered.
I didn't dedicate a thread to pointing out people's mistakes.
Does it fill you with satisfaction to point these things out?
We all hate it when someone gets it wrong.
But in three simple words, GET OVER IT.
How about you point out things when they get it right?
This thread sucks balls.
