Why dont they put all the teams in a hat, draw out the winners, pay them the cash, and that way MOST people will be happy

I dont give a rats anal about this competition

For starters what gives CD/NW/EG the right to play
Should be all 9 sanfl teams participating

Yes - apparently reductions were for the quantum AND the number of place-getters (top 3 league teams only in 2010, I believe).

Unlike the AFL - where the grand finallists got (huge) grand final prizemoney TWICE because of the drawn game.

They earnt nothing as far as Im concerned
They finished 1-2-3rd and they were selected for this comp
None of the qualified teams or the teams 4-5-6-7-8 would have known about this new comp[if they knew i will retract]
The sides that finished 1-2-3 CD/NW/EG earnt the right to play Prelim Finals and the Grand Final

My team NW has no more right than your team GL as far as Im concerned
Had they started this new comp the previous 3 years then it would have been GL playing and not NW

As for the comp $40 k to the winner is that right ?
If it is we should put this in the Best Jokes thread

Who pays for injury rehab
Who pays for airfares
Who pays for accomodation

These questions might have been asked and answered in this thread
I really cant be bothered reading the whole thread

I just hope this far fetched comp is not a distraction for the CD/.NW/EG football clubs

why is it interesting for? The top clubs focus is on winning finals and the best way to do that is to structure a program for their players by giving them a rest when they have a bye instead of playing a mickey mouse competition.

Interesting quote from Norwood in regards to why they won't enter the comp:

``We've signed a lucrative contract with our major sponsor and we'll stand by him before getting a new jumper for this competition.''

Sounds like the AFL want the participating clubs to wear new guernsey designs for the comp too. This comp sounds increasingly dodgy by the day.

Or possibly current designs minus current sponsor logos? I thought that comment from Dom was interesting too .. Matt Benson's was perhaps the most succinct for mine.

Of course its dodgy. The afl will want all clubs to have new guernseys with the afl logo and all the sanfl clubs wont be able to display current sponsors. Next the afl will be telling them what colours they can wear

Has anyone here been able to gauge the reactions from clubs in interstate leagues?

So only the teams who have no hope of winning a premiership are interested in playing !
Has anyone invited Goodwood Saints ?

Disappointed that Sturt aren't keen, but I want in for selfish reasons. Matt Benson makes a point about the prize money, not worth the effort.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

For years on this forum, posters have floated the idea of just such a competition, usually with enthusiasm.

Now that something has been done, everyone is canning it.

if there was more exposure for the local clubs to get the sponsors out there then it could work

I think most people would love to see a national 2nd tier competition. However, the current model proposed by the AFL appears to be very rushed with little consultation with the state league clubs, with many strings attached (including the AFL appearing to dictate who can sponsor the clubs involved) and minimal prize money. It would be a slap in the face for companies like Holden who have sponsored Centrals for 20+ years yet given the chance for exposure in a national football competition told sorry, the AFL will be making Centrals be sponsored by (for example) Toyota.

Although I've been championing the cause - I can see the flaws. That's not to say that they couldn't be overcome with some flexibility and sacrifice. But that would only happen if the SANFL & the clubs were committed to the cause, which it seems they are not - and that is the disappointment to me.

I hope it gets off the ground and will wish the clubs that do accept the invitation the best of luck.

An interesting thought though. Assuming the concept still goes ahead this year and lets say Port, West & South accept the invitation and participate. Imagine if it turns out to be reasonably successful with Foxtel and they iron out a few kinks with the format and decide to ramp up the prizemoney for the following season, I think it only fair that when all SANFL clubs are jostling for a position that those that bit the bullet this year were handed first refusal.
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.
