National 2nd Tier Competiton Discussion

All discussions to do with the SANFL

This is an absolute farce and a sham i have been against this concept since day one, what really should happen is to scrap the AFL ( vfl ) and have a real national competition say 3 teams from each state VIC,SA,WA being the dominant footy states, then 1 team each from ACT,TAS,NSW,QLD & NT making it a 14 team comp and call it the ANFL this of course will be called the Premier League and these clubs will also have a reserves team, surely the footy brains in Australia can come with a viable NATIONAL competition.
SANFL 2000 - 2011 Central District 12 consecutive Grand Final appearances and 9 Premierships.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFF.

Hit em hard let them get up and hit em again.

Here is the latest Messenger update.

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/sanfl-may-field-second-stringers/story-fn525un5-1225968451603?from=public_rss

And now the battle lines are drawn ... will be interesting to see what arises.

Here is my personal concern.....
if its next week before the top 3 need to reply
then add on another week for other 6 teams to take up spots if declined by the top 3
then everyone in football will be on leave for Christmas soon probably back January 10
only when the 3 SA teams are finalised can a draft of the 2011 SANFL schedule is done
then the draft needs to be approved by the club GM's
it may not be released until late January.

The idea has merit but seems to be too rushed for 2011, I think there should be a seperate committee made up of one representative from each league to coordinate it with Foxtel. Then the best interests of the clubs might be taken into consideration.

Mind you our clubs could play weakened teams in the first 2 rounds and get thru to the Semi's then their top players only need to play 2 games max extra and if you take away the state game its only one extra game for your clubs most valuable players.

Prize money aside I can't understand why it still wouldn't be lucrative for the clubs from a sponsorship perspective. Fielders are the eagles sponsors and I think they'd be furious at the club for passing this opportunity. Surely they might increase the amount of sponsorship to be given this sort of coverage.

And once again - if it is an issue about players getting tired and needing a break during the bye - field half a team of reserves!!! I really believe this is a decision being made at board level because I'm sure all the players would be keen, particulalry those who will never play AFL and see this as their only opportunity to play on the MCG.

Please, please reconsider your decision eagles!!!

BTW - does anyone know whether the grand final of the Champions League would be played before the AFL grand final?

From previous reports I believe the GF would be played in August.
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

Oh good on ya Chandler, who the hell is the SANFL if it is not the clubs ?
You are signing on are you ?
Who is going to play if the individual clubs say no thanks ???
What an absolute joke from a Dimitreou puppet. Yes sir no sir how high sir ?

I support and hope my club Norwood tell the AFL to stick it firmly up their arse. $40,000 to the winner is an insult to our League.
I am proud of Centrals, Norwood and the Eagles and hope the rest of the clubs tell em to jam it !

These few lines from the press report, quoting WWT and Centrals CEO's, sum it up perfectly.

"We do not see the financial advantage of it (the champion's league), and we are concerned about the duty of care to our players."
"We would consider a change of that belief if some of the conditions were changed."

"Central District CEO Kris Grant said his board also initially rejected the offer based on similar concerns to the Eagles."

The whole circus is just something dreamed up by Fox TV, to fill a dead spot in their Saturday programming, between 2 AFL games. They're hoping it will attract more revenue. Trouble is they want to do it on the cheap. The total prize money may sound nice, but the devil is in the detail. Flying football teams and their support staff around the country, plus accommodation in many cases, plus extra compensation for players, plus extra insurance, risk of extra medical bills etc etc, is an expensive business. Fox and/or the AFL will need to put a lot more money on the table than they have to date, before any of the SANFL clubs will come to the party.

I for one would not like to see the CDFC participate. I would not want to see any player who might benefit from a week off asked to give up that bye weekend to pander to the AFL's whims when it could be better spent recovering from injury or freshening up. And then I'd hate to see a second rate centrals side representing the club on a national stage.

I can see no way we can in our sport have a legitimate and fair competition like this.

SANFL chief officer football and corporate operations Darren Chandler said the SANFL's commission believed it was in the best interest of the competition to be involved in the championship despite the concerns of its clubs.

Right, so thus far you have 3 from 3 saying it's inadequate at the moment, but the commission believes otherwise .. Can someone remind me who's interests they're meant to represent again?

I spoke to a couple of league players from two clubs (admittedly small sample) and it seems that the early board comments are what those players felt - The recovery from nagging injuries offered through the weekend off is important to the overall season.

Good concept but poor timing during season and nil financial incentive's - sad

Dont anyone think that the winner will be able to add $40K-$50K to their bottom line.

Anyone who thinks that playing these 4 extra games will be ALL expenses paid has blinkers on.

How pathetic by the commission. I'd like to see how they managed to negotiate such ridiculous terms for the clubs they represent. Forty thousand dollars (though not insignificant) is a joke if they want the competition to be meaningful. It's probably just the equivalent to one rookie payment. I'm also hearing they're not even paying the players their normal match payments. So play a game take the risk, for less money, in a comp. that they deem only worthy of $40,000 for winning.
Additionally they've shafted the ABC that at least supports local footy, to support Foxtel.
I hope either all teams knock it back and stand as one. Or the top three clubs play their reserves and U18's in the hope they may jag the $40,000.
Treated second rate again. I think Chandler has some serious questions to answer.

The organisation of this reminds me of the Magpies trying to arrange an anniversary game at AAMI last year...

I dare say Port, Sturt and West may be the only clubs interested purely on financial grounds

This concept is a farce, but it WILL go ahead and centrals, norwood and eagles WILL paticipate. The sanfl got into bed with the afl so that demetriou prick will demand that the clubs take part. The afl has us over a barrel and can threaten to withdraw funds for adelaide oval redevelopment or if they wanted to get really nasty they could threaten to give the crows or power worse draws. One way or another the sanfl will be shafted so we might aswell lube up now to avoid a bit of pain

Good.
The first is a farce anyway and will fall over anyway, and the second reveals for all the truth that the "AFL" is really still the VFL..
