Kory Beard & Sammy Grey will be very hot property this off season.

Would imagine they may get drafted anyway.
Gray definately could play AFL

Will Port enter a side in SANFL reserves competition next year? I heard part of the plan was to have a Magpies side on A1 division of Amateurs and not in reserves. Hasn't been well popularised but I heard it from a good source.

Power to draft them just to show they care.

Gray has trained with the Power the last 2 pre seasons in the lead up to pre season drafts and has been overlooked both times.

Sam will be over 22 years old by round 1 next year, Beard already 23.

Yeah, I'm a little confused too! I want to know if in 2014, are port magpies still going to be the same as this year, or are they 'dead' as we have been thinking up until the last couple of days. From what I understand:
1. Magpies guernsey and logo remains in 2014
2. All port power listed players eg Renouf, Hitchcock, Stevenson etc will be playing for port 'magpies'
3. Any current magpie player who is over 22 will be looking for another sanfl /amateur club in 2014

This an accurate assumption?

Points 1,2 and 3 are correct.

All Port Adelaide AFL listed players not playing in the AFL side will play in the Magpies side. This could in fact be league or reserves next year. So yes, as I understand it Hitchcock, Logan etc will move to the Magpies next year. This then confirms point 3 that any Magpies player over the age of 22 wont be required next year.

As one player noted "Where will you go?"....."Country. For the best coin on offer"

This is how I understand the happenings of yesterday and last night at Magpies training. Will be some interesting moments tomorrow at the Bay when a player "has to go"...will he, or wont he? I hope the players would see the game as a moment in time that the Port Adelaide Magpies simply must win.

What's your thoughts on this Booney?

I know it is hard on the senior non-AFL listed Magpies players, but it would be unfair for Port to be able to pluck off the best SANFL talent via the rookie draft as well as add to this with hardened senior SANFL players. There had to be some compromise from the two AFL teams joining the SANFL competition.

I think this model will work well. I hope Port can keep it this way for a longer period than one year.

PS. I would have made a concession for those who have played over 100 games with the Magpies to continue on if they wanted to. I think there would be only 2-3 of them - Summerton, Meiklejohn, Slattery?

The way he teed off on social media the other day I'm thinking he would be burning any magpie stuff he owns and waiting by his phone for any other SANFL club to call and invite him out to training.

You can't blame him. Guys like him suffer the most out of all this. From what he wrote he seems like a pretty smart guy, I'm guessing once things cool down a bit he'd realise the situation and then could decide if he wanted to help the Port club out in this altered way (if the rules meant he could stay), or get the most out of his career as an SANFL player and join another club, or go bush for the $$$. There is no hiding from the fact that the AFL side is #1 down at the Port and so it should be. Doesn't mean the Magpies don't/can't play a meaningful and important role though.

Pure tokenism
Bunch of Power players and kids running around in a Magpies guernseys doesnt make them Magpies.
Port Magpies will never get to add to their tally of SANFL flags which is a sad day for footy in this state

God I hope Battersby gets drafted by the Hawks. Used to hope the junior stars got drafted by the local AFL clubs but now I couldn't think of anything worse

Pretty mixed emotions, Aerie.

I dont really know what to think. Feel for the senior players who will lose their home, feel for junior players trying to crack the league side, feel for the likes of Nick Salter who might play against the Eagles round 1 next year. I dont know what to think. I have started drafting a post several times, then delete it and start again.

there will be that initail hope that playing well against the Crows reserves side may earn a player a crack at being drafted the next season.

that will disappear after a year when the Crows go and draft a bunch of victorian kids from the TAC cup and a heap of ex basketballers who are played 4 games in div 89 ammos in 1992.

Yes indeed. With the excess Magpie players who decide to stay in the SANFL some clubs would have to cut players to fit any inclusions into the salary cap etc. Some will bite the bullet and leave before this even happens.

How much money will Port be saving now it no longer has to fund a magpie side.
