If the Crows and Power were in the eight and exhibiting good form the attendances would likely be as they were and tv ratings on a par with their traditional results. All sides have there hangers on that are only there when they are winning, that is hardly a new phenomena, when South put together a string of wins its amazing the number of termites that wriggle out of the woodwork!

Whilst Adelaides crowds have clearly dipped dramatically the last 1 1/2 seasons due to being crap, from 05-09 they were still on a steady decline despite making the finals each year. That is the worry, not the big drop the last two years.

I would guess that 25-33% of people who go to AFL games are going to see a form of entertainment. If it ain't entertaining, they aren't going.

Spot on tsg. Last Crows game my son and I went to was the prelim against Eagles at Footy Park. We were TOTALLY pissed with the coaching in second half . Come 2008 couldn't be bothered going back and havn't been back since. Got nothing to do with Footy Park but has a lot to do with sterile one sided crowd and a style of kick backwards, hand ball mad BS game style. See Ya Later AFL.
And if the Roosters hadn't dumped Healy I would have probably thought twice about going down to Prossie. It is all about the game

I think the Giant and the Girl have nailed the two key factors. And when you put them together, i.e. "I can't afford to go to see these sides play like crap", it's a hard sell.

I didn't stop going to Prossie but my Boss [wife] used to arc up with me gone for two days of the weekend for footy. Add the sons junior footy and the odd !!! day down the pub I couldn't blame her. Happy wife, Happy life.

Something had to give and I am SOOOOOOOO glad the AFL gave me the excuse I was looking for. The standard of EXPERIENCE is everything. I dont even watch the AFL on the box as much as I used to and that has been replaced with posting on safooty . :D

Not sure which thread to put this one in but here will do for now...

Just on the news it said that attendance figures for the AFL have grown 4% this year...

Adelaide's has shrunk 2% and the Power's has shrunk 5% this year...not sure if it's both home and away or just home...

Great to see Rowey talk the SANFL up in the segment! :D

I think its interesting that since Wayne Jackson has left the AFL. The Adelaide clubs have gone steadily into delcine.

Not that he handed everything to the SA-AFL teams at all.

Lucas in a speech to Parliament this week and an interview with The Advertiser on Thursday claimed: "A lot of the problems Port is suffering have been self-inflicted.

Last year, at a time when Port was putting out its hands to the football league, its own supporters and the AFL, it paid over $90,000 in bonuses to its chief executive officer Mr Haysman, as well as other executives and staff.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

If this has been mentioned, then I apologise, I have missed it
Something I haven't heard mention in this whole topic, either on threads here or in The Advertiser (don't listen to the radio much) is the "status" of Port's sponsors. Previously they have had well-known major sponsors in Scott's, Vodafone and Bianco, but the last couple of years their major sponsors (My ATM and Soaring Securities) are companies that are hardly household names. How come they have not been able to attract a well-known sponsor over the last few years? How much would these companies be putting in compared to the other clubs major sponsors? Even many SANFL clubs have more well-known sponsors.

My ATM had financial difficulties in the recent past and corporate premier sponsor Bianco now gone - I wonder if Port went after Angus and Robertson and Borders as well to be potential sponsors?

Could that 4% increase have anything to do with the additional teams in the AFL?

And the fact the top 4 are Geelong, Collinwood, Hawthorn and Carlton also Essendon and West Coast in the top 8.

No coincidence me thinks.
