If it was a choice of them merging with the Power and playing as a reserves side for them in SANFL or them dying completely I say let them die.

For the average supporter of SANFL football this would seem like a ridiculous notion that you could openly admit you hope the Magpies die.

What a bitter, bitter person you must be.

As much as I have hated the Magpies over the years, it would be sad to see them die. You have to respect what they have achieved.

dont want to see them die, but would be good to see them get a wooden spoon or ten. but for a really strong sanfl you need a strong port magpies (and norwood) but it may be a while before that happens again.

No not bitter at all Booney I just happen to believe the SANFL would be better off with an 8 team comp with no Magpies rather than the obvious other alternative of them playing as a Power reserves side.

Why the personal attack No Mercy. I like anyone else on this forum am entitled to my opinion. I was merely reporting what I had heard on the Channel 7 news tonight. To be truthful I don't think it does any good for the SANFL to see the Magpies continue in the current form - they are a joke on the field and off the field from a financial point of view and I don't believe they should be able to exist as a merged entity of the Power. That's my opinion and it won't change anytime soon.

I have the utmost respect for the Magpies they have been a fantastic club in our great competition. You don't win 30 + premierships without being a strong club. I think the major issue here is the Power - it was a dead set mistake allowing them to take the 2nd SA license in the AFL. Port Adelaide should only blame themselves for what they have become.

Given the hypothetical (note emphasis) choice of the Magpies either becoming a Power reserves team or folding - I would opt for the fold as well. I do not want to see any AFL reserve sides in the SANFL, be they Power, Crows, or other.

I still am angry what Port did to the SANFL in 1990 in regard to the AWFL. But as a one eyed North Adelaide member that does not like Port Adelaide one bit I hope to hell they fight their way out of trouble. The SANFL needs a club like Port to keep the comp strong and viable. I know North fans flock to Alberton as I think it is one of the best grounds to watch footy.

Nice explanations, EHL, but I think the "Die, Magpies, Die" bit undermines your position somewhat.

Youd know what it was like to follow a club which was a joke on and off field for 40 years so you are well qualified to comment.

I agree with that. I don't want to see the Magpies go at all, but if the above scenario comes to fruition, then so be it I guess... :(

Just a bit, there's no back pedaling from that one.

I dont want them dead at all, but the realistic situation is that they are gone unless someone ponies up a massive cash injection.

Some would say it's karma, but I wouldn't wish it on them. Strange to see that the most powerful club in the history of the comp is the first against the wall.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Agree entirely. I don't want to lose them but if it's one or the other, we can't allow the comp to be tainted by such a merge.

you can't merge them. Can you imagine, for instance, if Dutschke & O'Hara were picked up by the power but had to play in the SANFL for The Maggies against their own club? There would be a lot of strange injuries to players if they were dropped from the AFL...they simply wouldn't want to play against their own club. There has to be a better way. Footy is a business these days & if a company is in strife financially, other companies don't come along & continually prop it up, unfortunately the company must go into receivership, cruel maybe but probably the only option :(

Under the model being considered no recruits from SANFL clubs would have to move, only interstaters (mostly juniors) would join the Magpies. And anyone who thinks Port Adelaide is going to dominate the competition under that scenario is seriously misguided.

I think you would need to be supremely naive to think that an 8 team competition without the Magpies will result in a stonger (or at least as strong) sanfl.

So the evaporation of 20% of all supporters will help?

The Magpies have been the sanfl's yardstick and it could be argued for Aussie Rules in general. How easily some are willing to let that disappear without considering the landscape thereafter.

If the only business model available to preserve the Magpies entity is a merger, then let it be so.
