Probably because Port would well and truly screw themselves up. Plus the sanfl have invested a fair whack of money in port, and might want to get some back.

nothing to do with money generated by Port for the sanfl

James 07, what does it cost the SANFL to put on an AFL game at Footy Park, ie, to pay for the catering staff, managers, security, cleaners, electricity, water, gas, insurance etc?

My understanding was that when they put their case to the SANFL to be the second side in the competition that they assured the SANFL that they would have an average attendance each game of 30 000, hence the stadium deal was set around that figure.

No I don't but I've been trying to find out. My point is that Port can't lay claim to all that game day generated money if the crowd don't turn more revenue than what it costs to host a game.

The SANFL are mostly run my morons really. To have $27Mil of debt. Now we all know thats not all from the power and the crows have been making plenty of money. So the question is, how did it get to this point?

If the SANFL releases the two AFL liences then yes the Port issue will be gone but the crows revenue generatorn will also be gone and as much as some backward people believe this would be the best move, its likely the SANFL will fold under the weight of the debt they it has generated somehow. The AFL wont give a toss about the SANFL folding. They probably can't wait so they can move in and start the AFL-SA like the AFL-QLD, and get rid of those annoying Adelaide people who can't seem to manage a business.

Stan, a basic finance lesson 101. Sometimes debt is good. There's good debt and bad debt. Do you or have you ever had a mortgage? If you do, is the debt you carry less than the value of your assets? If yes (like most of us) are you a moron for investing this way (I won't make the assumption based on your post)? Have you ever heard of an investment that is funded by debt, but may produce cash flow and potential capital gains? Tha SANFL have over $100 million in assets. The loss last financial year was due some one offs, and a drop in crowds and catering revenue. I suggest you don't read the Annual report.

I don't disagree with the second part "The AFL wont give a toss about the SANFL folding".

How would the SANFL fold?
The licenses market value add up to 70 million, Football Park and it's surroundings are worth a couple of hundred million, most clubs are now profitable and the debt is a mere 27 million.
Add to that the SANFL will be the landlords for football games at Adelaide Oval.

The only sway and current noose around the SANFLs neck that gives the AFL any leverage is the 2 licenses.

You are right that sometimes debt is good. But the whole 'we cant borrow any more money' stories from the last couple of weeks would lead me to think that their debt may not lean towards the positive.

Disagreed, them saying that was merely a nice way of telling Port and the AFL that they can go and get ****ed and that they're sick and tired of propping up incompetence.
They could get a 100 mil credit limit from the bank tomorrow if they really wanted to.

Yes I understand good and bad debt and yes I have a mortgage. The issue is you can't call Port Good Debt or Debt for operational costs good debt, I'm pretty certain it would be bad debt. Adn yeah you guys are right the SANFL has plenty of assets.

Yes, the SANFL should probably just "move on" and sell their 2nd AFL licence to Tasmania ;) . Tassie are desperate to get their own team in the AFL.

Tassie would probably be keen they would love an AFL side, but I reckon North have that area pretty well covered at the moment.

Im pretty sure the AFL would have conditions attached to the licenses to prevent the holder from on-selling to whomever or wherever they want.

Anyway, Port aren't going anywhere, IMHO that's a fanciful thought shared by some non-Port aligned people ... Having a healthy Port is still in everyone's best interests, that get's overlooked a bit I reckon.
