Central Eagles and Norwood are OK for depth IMO, but the next four teams success or lack there of will be dependant on players 18-25 stepping up and playing good league footy.

See if you work out who my top 3 are, the next four and by process of elimination who I think will finish in the bottom two. FWIW I think my team will finish sixth.

I don't subscribe to the theory of some posters on here that you need to make multiple posts on the same topic in different threads, except if I'm responding to miss-information on boundaries, the pros of the 17-19s system and or bagging Jimmy Alle(a)n. ;)
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Say whaaat??

Over the past 12 years that Central have played in Grand Finals, it is rare that their Grand Final opponent has gone well in the following year. They seem to have a letdown after playing in the GF. That, plus the fact that for most of last year, the Eagles could only be considered to be the third best team in the competition (behind Norwood and Central). Yes, they won the premiership but were they really the best team based on the full season? Some key personnel will be missing next year (Tiller, Treeby, Rimmington, Geddes and Symmons).
Anyway, just my thoughts. Being involved at the Eagles for six months of the year I hope I am wrong!
Cheers

I disagree.

After 2000 the Eagles fronted again for second in 2001, then finished fourth in '02 (then third in '03 FWIW). Followed up 2004 with another second in 2005 and then a Premiership. Third in 2007. Five "after Grand Final vs CDFC " seasons, average place 2.4 .

Norwood - 2011, second in the minor round, finished third.

Glenelg - third in '09.

West - fifth in '04, then continued to nosedive.

Sturt - Without going into detail, notable event affecting them going into 2003. Had a good side that year, finished third (??) in the minor round and - in that one off "final four" year - dropped the 1st Semi to the Eagles (a result widely enjoyed at the expense of a more audacious element of online support that year too, but I digress.) Minor round 4th in 2010 and dropped the Elimination final. Two seasons, average position 4.5.

North are the only club to miss the finals the year after playing a Grand Final versus Centrals, finishing seventh in 2008.

All sides, all up, 11 seasons, averaging 3.5 (3.2 if you ignore North's result.)

FWIW, outside the scope, these all follow Port's first and second place finishes in 1996 and '97.

Perhaps. Depends on which "most" of the season you consider.

It could reasonably be argued that that the Grand Final result was pretty much on par with the run into the pointy end of the season, particularly after the first "round" of byes (ie, after round nine, early June onwards.)

In this time, the Eagles were the best in the competition in terms of percentage and - just - in terms of margin per match (predominantly due to an exceptionally good defence). Yes, alright, they did lose two and three more games respectively than Centrals and Norwood in that time.

I take your point, StrayDog. However, West, Sturt, Glenelg and North have all begun a rapid downward spiral after playing Central in a Grand Final. A club would expect to play in the GF again, having made it the year before. The average of 3.5 means that, on average, sides don't even make the top three the season after, which would be extremely disappointing to all at the club, I am sure. In fact, only one team has managed to make the Grand Final the season after playing Central in the Grand Final. Admittedly, that team is the Eagles.
On reflection, I think my 'list' had them outside the five because I have not recovered from the 'sunken' feeling I had on Grand Final day. I did not make it to the GF, scoring A Grade instead for West Torrens Cricket Club. The feeling I have from seeing the many Eagles supporters around me madly celebrating the GF win is something that will give me nightmares for a long time to come still!! *grins*
Thank God I at least had Adam Crosthwaite to console me, being a Central supporter for the day. However, even he has deserted us and started barracking for West now - the blighter!! *grins*

Yeah, I guess if the time frame were extended beyond "the following year", probably a fair observation in the main - though Glenelg's third, fourth (in two straight finals) and fifth mightn't be considered "rapid".

They've done it three times including a flag - two other sides have gone on to finish top three. These five seasons alone (out of 11) might not support your original point of following year performance rarity, IMHO.

Here's hoping the boys can get one back on the Eagles for you soon, particularly if you end up in the same company.

Good onya bp2, thanks for the reply.

Hard to see Pfeiffer winning the MM, I see him playing the majority of the year for port adelaide. Interesting call.

He would have to be elevated to the Power's senior list as he is only a rookie...

sturt, north and westies to fill bottom three, dogs and eagles/warriors won't be far away again, and the rest will be close. Don't think the bays will flop like so many think. We'll only miss cranston and t grima. I know b kane won our b&f, but he did it playing loose behind the ball, we can find plenty to fill that roll. Some handy additions, i think we play finals again. Winning one is another story

Thats been done now, not that I necessarily expect him to play every game for Port, although his form in the game against Melbourne was encouraging.

Still, I doubt he'll play enough for Norwood to win the Medal.
