Question mark has always been about a lack of pace.

As CK mentioned on RPH this morning, a club should at least offer him a pre-season to see how he goes.

Interesting games on the night, vote wise, and for the statistically minded – not having a go at all at the umpires, just pointing out some games and indicating that sometimes the stats may not indicate impact. Jason Sutherland certainly stood out to the umpires, though:

Round 2, PA 9.9 d Glenelg 9.7:
Josh Thurgood 2 votes: 16 disposals, 6 marks, no goals
Brett Ebert no votes: 30 disposals, one goal

Round 6: CD 16.6 d St 11.13:
Jason Sutherland – 3 votes: 9 disposals, 5 marks, 26 hitouts
Angus Kurtze – no votes: 19 disposals, 8 marks, 27 hitouts

Round 8: CD 16.11 d SA 10.11
Jason Sutherland – 2 votes: 10 disposals, 3 marks, 19 hitouts.

W/WT 8.9 d WA 7.10
Jared Petrenko – 3 votes: 18 disposals, 3 marks, no goals
Mark McKenzie – no votes: 31 disposals, 11 marks

Round 10, Nwd 7.12 d CD 7.11
Paul Thomas CD – 1 vote: 14 disposals, no marks, no goals

Round 11, Central 14.8 d Port 10.7
3. L Harder (PA)
2. M Banner (PA)
1. J. Gowans (CD)

Round 12: CD 22.11 d Glenelg 6.14
Jason Sutherland – 1 vote: 14 disposals, 10 hitouts.

Round 16: SA 18.10 d Sturt 13.11
Adam Cockshell – 1 vote: 12 disposals, 12 hitouts

Round 17: W/WT 18.14 d West 5.9
Adam Grocke – no votes: 17 disposals, 7 marks, 6.8, BUT reported, which may partially prove the thought that a player getting reported doesn’t get votes

Round 18: Norwood 14.3 d Port 11.9
Stuart Bown – 3 votes: 12 disposals, 7 marks, no goals.

Round 21: Glenelg 13.8 d West 10.14
Daniel Kirk – 3 votes: 16 disposals, 8 marks, 12 hitouts.

SANFLnut wrote:Congrats to Jimmy Allan good effort in anyone's books. My problem with him winning is that if other players in the comp were given a similar role then they would actually be far more damaging. Nathan Eagleton, Jade Sheedy, James Ezard all cop a hard tag to shut them down while many SANFL coaches are happy to let Allan accumulate other people's kicks and take him on head to head. They would only do that if they felt their team gets an advantage by doing so. I have also not seen Allan play a defensive role at all anytime I have seen him play. While he is getting 35 touches, what is his direct opponent getting? Were there games where he had 35 touches, conceded 30 to his opponent, collected 3 votes and lost? If Paul Thomas or Mark Mckenzie played midfield all year they would win the medal over Allan. Each of these leaders are used in other roles to the betterment of their teams. Not Allans fault and the others are having more team success, however it does make the award a bit lopsided.

Another post full of inaccurate assumptions. Allan gets tagged almost every week but his ability to shake off his tag, his ball getting ability in the bucket loads after positioning himself to get it plus his ability to break tackles and evade especially close in is why he has won a third and why he is the best player in the comp.

His direct opponent would be the opposing centreman - hardly think that is who his tag is so of course his direct opponents and himself play wide. Look for other opposition players to tag him e.g. Gallman "tags" on ballers / opposition danger men for North but Allan plays centre, often Gallman starts outside the square and moves in at the bounce to pick up his tag. Maybe you should watch the North game more closely and watch the set ups and how Allan gut runs all game to get his stats. As for a defensive game go and look at his stats for clearances out of the defensive 50 and his tackle count. Geez.....!

Agree with all of this except that he is the best player in the comp. Certainly in the top bracket and it would be hard to argue a case for anyone to be better than him, but I wouldn't swap him for McKenzie and I'm sure Central supporters wouldn't swap him for Thomas neither. Magarey Medal does not necessarily reflect who is the best player in the competition.

Some interesting analysis there CK. The most glaring one IMO is Grocke's game in Round 17. Was a TV game which I saw most of, and he was clearly in the best 3 on the ground.

Fair enough - the age old argument between supporters will go on as long as the game is played as to who we all see or believe is the best player in the comp at a given time or during an "era". The 70's was the classic re the comparison between Robran and Ebert.

No doubting the credentials of McKenzie and Thomas re being the best in the comp too but hard to argue against Allan. McKenzie IMO would be the most versatile player in the SANFL for many a year and I would have been very happy to see him in R&W.
Piss weak SANFL and the CLOWNS who run it.

Really you can only split players into categories as they all play different roles for their side and have different attributes which make each individual better at different areas eg,

best possesion getter- J.Allan
fittest player- J.Allan
most versatile- M.McKenzie
best defensively- P.Thomas
most coragoues- P.Thomas (debatable i know)
most skilled- C.Gowans
most dangerous around goals- I.Callinan (i know his AFL listed now)

Its funny how often we critise/abuse umpires and alot on here consider the umpiring this season to be some of the worse we have seen YET we put so much prestige on an award which adjudged by these 'white' maggots.

For me clubs B&F is a better reflection as to has had good years as these are voted by members of the coaching commitmee who know what each players roles are, they know what team rules they expect players to abide by.

Well Done J.Allan

As the Award is for the Fairest and Most Brilliant, supporters version of who was best on the day may differ with what the umpires have to decide.
Best player on the day may not meet fairest and most brilliant definition.
If reported on the day not sure umpires would then consider fairest in that match.

If wanting a best award maybe the Adveriser award or the Shearman medal award or a players MVP would be way to go.

The Magarey is unique in its definition.

Congratulations to J Allan .

I personally found some of the voting quite bizarre...
I think even Nick Liddle would agree ,he had a far better season last year than this year...

How Joel Cross, whom many on this site thought would be right in the hunt managed only 6 votes is beyond me,I have seen all of our games this year and I believed he would receive Souths highest number of votes, he must have been suffering from Rhys Archard syndrome I think.

I personally attended the West v WWT game in Rd17 where Grocke absolutely dominated the game and did not register a vote. Granted he was reported, but surely when the umps are allocating the votes post game they cannot judge the player guilty of the offence and not award votes to him.

It seemed to happen quite often, that a player from a losing side managed to collect 3 votes.....most noticably in the final vote announced last night of course, but plenty of other times during the year as well.

I was surprised how poorly Ed Sansbury polled, particularly in the first half of the season.

Just have a real issue with people comparing him to Ebert, Robran and co. No doubt a great player but not fit to be mentioned in the same breath as those other legends. Name of the medal should of changed once the Crows were formed

When Robran and Ebert and company were in their peak no one compared them. It was Robran first, daylight second, Ebert thrid, daylight fourth, the rest fifth (and the rest included players of the ilk of Bagshaw, Cahill, Blight and Woite).

Go back to any paper when Robran was at his peak and the only comparison made was with Jesaulenko who was considered the best in the VFL at the time.

Wasn't the runaway winner that people thought, well done to Nick Liddle and Paul Thomas on having great years also.

Nb. I notice it's only the Norwood supporters who've taken issue- a chip on the shoulder remaining from Maccas inelegibility to win the 1987 Magarey Medal?

Not true about Norwood supporters. I said he was a very worthy winner and he is probably the best player in the last 20 years but i dare say even North supporters would be offended at him even being mentioned in the same breath as the great man Robran.

some comments were sour grapes.
I believe the current SANFL standard is equal to the Reserves standard of the mid-late 80's.
Watching the South v Glenelg game, the amount of times the ball didn't hit targets, and the overall play was scrappy, reminded me of the above.

No North supporter would condemn you for suggesting there's a chasm bewteen Robran and Allan, but we digress- Jimmy is certainly a deserving winner, & no-one would begrudge any of his medals, or time in the spotlight.

If an umpire was to award a player votes after he was reported in the same game it would be hypocritical, if the umpire believes his report was warrented there is no way he can also believe the same player was the fairest on the field.
