Found this below at the bottom of an interesting article on the AFL clubs perhaps going it alone with a 'reserves' competiton next year...

Sam Landsberger @ The Herald Sun wrote:
Cup plan to get green light

A SECOND-TIER knockout competition featuring the best non-AFL teams looks certain to start next season."There are some very positive signs that the national competition will get up," AFL Victoria chairman Grant O'Riley said.

"Once the announcement is made, a lot of the logistical things will fall into line."

The FA Cup-style competition is tipped to feature 16 clubs, including the Greater Western Sydney Giants, and will be called the Champions League.

This is the main article that talks about the AFL clubs going their own way and possibly ceasing their affiliation with VFL clubs...

We can only hope this competition gets of the ground with all top clubs competing.

It could change the face of footy as we know it.

Lets play our comp like the English soccer.

Early days yet.

We could be introducing devisions now.

Only good for Aussie Footy ;)

It will take a long time. :D
Smile :)

It's only Money $$$ :)

What is happening to our SANFL guys...

As it is not 100% concrete yet I will still use the word if here.

If it goes ahead, I will certainly travel anywhere to see us play. However, what I will not like is getting strange looks from people or patronising comments from people waiting for the so called "main attraction" of the day - i.e. the AFL match.

Particularly if it's in Victoria - you know, "2nd rate comp, who cares about your match", and so on.

Isn't it ironic when a dimwit makes a condescending remark about Elizabeth.

Definition of dimwit would be someone who can't tell the difference between a question and a statement.
the voice wrote:Don't know if anyone has mentioned this already, would it be a good proposal to have say 6 U/18's players required to play in the champions league teams? This would help gain exposure for potential draftees to AFL scouts and also lighten the load on injuries and salary cap issues for the clubs involved.

Does that help you jimbob?
I was happy to be explained the U18 commitments and why it would be to difficult by 85 was a good year. No point being terds about it from the rest of you though.

I would definately go the matches in Melbourne that my Eagles play in but other interstate venues maybe a bit too much of a stretch.

It's worse in Adelaide at Footy Pk, you'd only get respect from the Vics.

About as ironic as someone taking offense at a suburb being spelt phonetically.

As expected, the coaches say they will not risk injury to senior players because at the end of the day, the SANFL Premiership is the number 1 focus.

yeah nothing really ground breaking there, i would expect if Central do participate in this comp they will be putting out a glorified reserves side on the park for these matches. I will still travel wherever they will be playing no matter who is on the park for the Dogs.

Rumour on the CDFC forum is that Central are playing the ACT's Ainslie? first up in this comp, is it even possible someone could know the first round draw. If this is the case i presume the game will be in SA as a curtain raiser as the ACT doesnt have an AFL side.

Why wouldn't the teams rest their key players against lower placed teams in the home and away season instead?

I know Centrals have tended to do this already anyway,

Plus it would be hard to know at this stage where other teams from other states compare to the lower ranked SANFL sides, would Ainslie be any better than South.

If Centrals play Ainslie, they should get Cowboy Neale to toss the coin. As he coached both clubs.

Having seen some matches from the Qld and NSW leagues, I don't think the SA, Vic and WA sides would have any problems with sides from those leagues and will play relatively weak lineups.

Sides with a sniff of winning the title will probably bring back more senior players.
