I hope you plan to give the Eagles fans landing punches get the same punishment then.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Why? They are all grown adults ( I assume ) who made their own decisions at the time on how they acted. Perhaps a little reflection on society here, people should take more responsibility for their won actions and not try to pass the blame?

It is obvious from the penalty that the Eagles believe that Leigh didn't start the fight.

I think making you sit through this weekend's game would be a harsher punishment

The Woodville West Torrens Football Club (WWTFC) advises that following the weekends incident at Woodville Oval and the subsequent investigation that the WWTFC have conducted alongside the SANFL into the matter, Leigh Treeby will face the following sanctions;

o $500 fine – the maximum that the Club can fine Treeby under the SANFL Constitution, Regulation 8.5.1.

o Treeby will also be unavailable for selection in the League team for this weekend’s vital clash with Norwood.

The WWTFC has also made a number of recommendations upon the request of the SANFL in relation to how we can avoid this type of incident in the future – which include making sure that both Clubs Cheer Squads set up a reasonable distance away from each other.

The sanctions on Treeby reflect his involvement in the incident and the WWTFC’s position that an official of the Club should not feel the need to respond to taunts of any nature; be they from supporters of our Club or an opposition Club.

Let it be clear however, that it is also the position of the WWTFC that the reactions of others involved in the incident were totally disproportionate to anything that had gone on previously and ultimately grossly inappropriate. There is no excuse for engaging in violence and we will continue to work with the SANFL to identify those involved.

Finally, as a Club we are committed to Woodville Oval being a family friendly venue and stress that this incident is an exception, not the rule, which our Club has acted swiftly to avoid in the future. We trust that as members of our Club you acknowledge this and we see you at Woodville Oval for our next home game against South Adelaide on July 17.

I can't help but feel that's a pretty weak penalty.

What's missing all week is the reaction of the Sturt FC. Even in CD's release above, it says that the WWTFC and the League are working to identify those involved - has Sturt FC had any involvement in the investigation?

The penalty is something people will have divided views on. But putting the outcome to one side, I have to say I think WWTFC have taken a very mature and open approach to this whole saga.

1. WWTFC officials have communicated with their club members and supporters and also the broader public.
2. WWTFC has seen fit for a penalty has been issued.
3. A desire has been expressed by WWTFC that it is keen to prevent something similar happening again.

In addition, Darren Chandler has also made public statements of concern and regret.

What puzzles me though is where Sturt FC officials have been for the past 4-5 days in all of this?

IMO the family Friendly area should be to the South of the Grandstand in the SW pocket, much more room there esp if there is a reasonable crowd

This comes across as unprofessional and sniping IMO. The only position of WWT is to deal with its people and it has done that and that's all that that release should address. Having a swipe at the opposition is unnecessary, it's up the SFC to talk to the people in charge of the cheer squad and hope they continue in their efforts to weed out the idiots.

I disagree. Stating that they've "punished" one party involved, but they will be pursuing others involved seems fair enough. Their responsibility I would think would be to provide a safe environment in which to watch the football. Therefore, also trying to ensure anyone transgressing is dealt with. Otherwise with no-one else announcing anything, it would give the impression that the others involved are getting away with their "grossly inappropriate" reactions.

"they did it too" is unbecoming of someone in a CEO position. Address what is in your control and leave it.

Hypothetically, someone, comes to your work place, taunts you and or physically attacks you, you react in some way. Your boss/ceo should punish you but not pursue the other party. I think not.
