From this comment I can only assume you think every player that was recruited in the early 2000's made a mistake by not choosing or being chosen by Centrals.

That's not how I'd interpret the above statement. I'd assume what's meant is what's written.

No disrespect to West Adelaide, but if he wanted to play in a senior premiership (and he chose the SANFL) what on earth was he doing at West Adelaide and Glenelg! He had as little chance playing in senior premierships as possible (save playing for South Adelaide...)!

ST...

you cant be serious ..... probably the most ridiculous post I have ever read. But you are a funny old fellow

I think ST post is pretty commonsense really, both West and Glenelg were midtable/cellar dwellars when he went to these clubs, they were definatly not premiership contenders amongst most pundits (even WAFC making the 2003 GF was a massive surprise).

IF he came to the SANFL wanting to win an SANFL premiership, it would certainly be fair to say he probably didn't pick the most attractive clubs at the time of his decisions.

Thanks for the support, whufc.
It's not a pi55 take - he arrived at a time that four clubs would have represented the best chance of playing in (and winning) a premiership.
Glenelg, West and South were not in that lot.

The irony of West Adelaide's 2003 once he'd flown the coup was not lost on me - and where did Mouse elect to venture if he so richly sought a premiership - Glenelg.

"Get with the program"... 8)

ST...

P.S. GossipGirl - took me a little while to work out who you were - the '2000' comment gave you up. Now, back to your Celtics, at least they can win every 100 years or so!

Backwell's comment about wanting to finish his premiership drought was made days ago, not 8 years ago when he came to the SANFL. i.e he didn't say that he chose West or Glenelg because he wanted to end a premiership drought.

Two questions:
1. Why did he leave West Adelaide?
2. How did he end up at Glenelg (like, did he select them etc...)?

On question 1. - I can't remember if he was, again, playing in Darwin, but between the end of 2002 and the start of 2003 Rehn asked him to commit to the club (I think by a certain date). Backwell wouldn't and Rehn didn't stand for it.

1. The story relayed to me is one that should not be repeated on here, as it will upset some.
2. He was playing in Darwin, David Noble was the newly appointed Senior Coach at Glenelg, contacted Brett and convinced him to come to Glenelg.

Brett was leaving West Adelaide before Rehn was even appointed. He didn't think Borchard had "footy smarts" and he wasn't going to get another go at the afl under such a coach. He had made his mind up about leaving 3 or 4 rounds before the end of the year.

That though doesn't explain why he wouldn't play once Borchard was moved on and Rehn appointed.

Simple - Rehn wanted all players on a two year contract -- Brett wanted a one year contract (continues this at the Bays I believe) as was his normal practice.

End story was that Shaun as coach was making a team point and players on two year contract was mandatory -- Brett would not accept two year contract so moved on.

Yes that's right oldfella, he did insist on that with others who weren't so keen on it either, but they relented. Mind you, it didn't help us keep some of them.

Very true i don't know the answer for that but from what oldfella has reported the contract length may have been the issue.

I haven't looked through the most recent pages of this thread - how did the Waratahs go on the weekend?

Lost to the Stormers 27 to 6, very disappointing after their great comeback win against Queensland the week before.

PS Brett Backwell's side won.
