Aerie wrote:Get our AFL Reserves in the VFL and let Port and the Crows have access to Under 20's from SANFL clubs as top ups. The effect on standard of the SANFL will be minimal and we'll be better off if they lift the salary cap and remove restriction on imports so we can get back to bringing in the best players outside of the AFL like we were in the early to mid 2000's. This doubles as potential positives for those young SA boys who miss out on getting drafted to have the opportunity to stay in an AFL system without leaving SA. Or they can try their hand at what would be the best State League competition in the land.

Agree with the general thrust Aerie but as I suggested before, I'd like to see it that they were first year out of u/18's, and the AFL teams could only have them for a year, after which they'd still be tied to our SANFL clubs if not drafted. I wouldn't like to see some sort of transfer to the AFL teams, as these players may then be lost to the SANFL clubs.
There will always be a few that really shine in the SANFL as 18yo's and the SANFL clubs would be giving that up, but then if they do, perhaps the SANFL clubs were lucky they weren't drafted anyway.

A couple of queries/comments on the Crows proposal, apologies if they've been raised:

The Crows would prefer Div 1 amateurs instead of SANFL reserves, so with the promotion system and if an amateur team cops a heap of injuries, potentially you could have a recovering Walker or a dropped Vince or McKay coming up against someone who a few months ago, at the end of the previous year, was playing Div 2 amateur reserves. Surely they are kidding themselves.

If the Crows become the tenth league team, will the season revert to a 22 games as in the 80's, or still be 20?
If the former, I'd think there'd be some backlash from current players who enjoy the byes given the time commitment for the decreased remuneration and limelight from the 80's.
If we stuck with 20 rounds, the only slight advantage to the Eagles would be when we're due to play West or South a second time at Woodville and attract 1300-1500 as a worst case scenario, and instead one of these games would be against the Crows in front of, average-to-best 4000. Of course, we might also be foregoing a second game against a Norwood, Sturt or North that could draw a 2500-3500 anyway, so very little gain there to us for f**king up our comp.
So if you're a more popular team averaging 3000-4000 anyway, there is virtually no gain.

Eagles have only had 2 crowds at home less that 2,000 over the past 3 seasons.

Alas 1 of those was last week.

A snippet on channel 9 sport tonight. The gist was, the reserves battle could get dirty. The afl clubs (crows shown) have "said" they'd try to take the sanfl sides sponsors if they can't play in the sanfl and had to play in the Vfl reserves and fund the extra $700k it would cost.
I wouldn't imagine that type of threat would be well received by sanfl clubs (or at least it shouldn't be).
What sanfl sponsors that haven't jumped ship already would do so because they have a reserves side in the Vfl?? Sounds really attractive.
These arrogant afl clubs have really shown their true colours over the last 6 months.
Sell their licenses, call in the loans, make money off the land at west lakes and Adelaide oval and charge them a fortune for the privilege of playing in our reserves! Arrogant f$&@"&$!! The afl directly pays the sanfl clubs SFA, so tell them where to go. They're bluffing - the sanfl have the strongest hand.

It was the crows allegedly making the threat, absolutely nothing to do with port as their fallback is to leave things as they are.

If the crows did go to the vfl it wouldn't just be sponsors they would be taking, there would be players raids as well to fill their vfl side, and I'd expect they would become significantly harder to deal with on dividends etc.

To be honest, if they were in the vfl and getting nothing from the sanfl their priority would be themselves so if funding it hurt the sanfl clubs as they lost sponsors... I guess That's how it would be.

Was listening to AA while cooking so I maybe heard wrong but someone rang up questioning what was happening with the reserves debate. Caller asked what was happening in the VFL and re a junior set up and zones as Port are pushing.
While Rowe knew how it was set up, McDermott had no idea whatsoever of the structure and alignments between the AFL & VFL clubs. If this idiot doesn't know the basics of the argument then he simply isn't fit to voice an opinion on air concerning this issue. He'd be better placed to go make the coffee's while this topic comes up. Strangely my text concerning this wasn't read out.
Yet only last week they urged people against the reserves teams to voice their opinions, as they "haven't heard from them".

The Crows threat to take sponsors from the SANFL is not only stupid it shows exactly how they value the League they evolved from and who feeds them regularly with players .... GOOD xxxxing players not duds from interstate !!!!!!!!!!!!
Shame Crows shame. I am totally disgusted by their stance.
A blind retarded monkey with one leg and one testicle ( nickname Lucky ) could clearly see that the AFL will in a few years be forced to form an AFL seconds team AND it will cost peanuts in the scheme of things.

The Crows for years now, have sold the SANFL short.
They are a corporate entity - designed to make money, a business if you will.
We can't be surprised at their position on this - what I have always sought is for them to OUTLINE their position to the Football Public, come 'clean' on the bid.
If their 'model' is so good - Why are they playing the 'confidential' card?
Moreover, why aren't the individual SANFL Clubs sharing the proposal with their members?
I would assume one of the reasons is that they are NOT confident in their own assumptions (e.g. crowd numbers & resultant $$$).

C'mon Rob Chapman, if you truly believe that SANFL Supporters need to be educated (i.e. to exactly what the proposal is), then put it on the table & let's discuss/debate it.

I would agree with 'Ian' - I too would have great respect for any opposition club who voted NO.

NO AFL in the SANFL

I was referring to the Adelaide oval deal/sanfl dividends.

I'd also add, the crows wouldn't be looking for 'ravens ' sponsors, the sponsors would be for the crows with money flowing to the ravens.
