Macca received the most votes in '87 when Jars won.

It's an interesting one, no doubt.

On one hand, Boyd missed football through suspension, and still finished ahead by a fairly large margin. Clearly showing he was the most brilliant player in the 2012 SANFL season.
On the other hand, Cross and Symes equalled second and won through the fact that Boyd was reported.

A shallow way to win, but I am sure they will both enjoy their Magarey status.

I think it may need to be looked at, imagine a player suspended for making contact with an umpire, not really an unfair act (as opposed to striking) if he missed out.
In this case though, Boyd struck an opposing player, was found guilty, and ineligible.

In this instance they got it right, but the simple mantra of any SANFL suspension ruling you out could be a bit flawed.

LOL. Of course Boyd was just an innocent party.

Best and fairest is the criteria for the award.

Can't get over the fact there are Dogs fans who seem more interested in the ineligible player than the player from their club who just won...
He isn't a Dogs player I guess, and I don't think he is highly rated by some Dog supporters.
He is a Dogs player and yes he is highly regarded. Him and Boyd have easily been our best players this year.

Congratulations to both Symes and Cross.
Might explain a couple of things.
That we finished two spots above North on the minor round ladder, says alot about Jimmy Allan then hey!

Not shallow at all, Boyd met half the criteria to win, Cross and Symes met all of the criteria to win.
Quite simple.
Anyway, we all know the Shearman medal is where its at, selected by 200 game players who know their stuff better than us or the umps, congratulations to Jimmy Allan winning his 6th! :D

Agree Wedgie. Allan by far the best player in the league. A great pity that he is leaving.

For a majority of that time they had a count back system, no multiple winners, until they worked out that was "wrong" also.

Congratulations to both Symes and Cross. Very deserving winners.
For South's sake I hope Cross stays.
Symes has been a very good footballer in our league for a while, so good to see him win, regardless of his AFL status.

Re AFL players, perhaps it could be a certain game limit before they are eligible. Maybe 8? Got no problems with Symes winning it after playing virtually the full season, but it wouldn't feel right if a player burnt and got BOG in the first six games and then spent the next four months in the AFL.

I believe the fairest criteria should stay. However, it is the responsibility of the league to ensure it has a proper tribunal process in place. For example, I wouldn't like to have seen Parry win it for his strike on the North player (names escapes me), but that Rowntree wasn't eligible because of his (or really Willits') contact is wrong, but the fault of the tribunal system not what the medal is trying to aim for.

How Allan won 1 still puzzles me.. The guy is a seagull. Wouldn't know a thing about a hard ball get. Glad he's leaving, just a pity my Eagles couldn't have sent him packing a week earlier.

Can remember when Anthony Ingerson fell one vote short of a Medal win after only playing about 8-9 games in the minor round.

Handicapping the Magarey Medal would only tarnish the award.

Make it a joke.

Interestingly if you are found guilty of an offence at the match review / tribunal
BUT
it is only deemed serious enough for a reprimand
THEN
you are still unable to win the Magarey Medal.

Not relevant in the Boyd case but I could this interpretation of a trivial offence causing a controversy some time down the track.

Perhaps they also need to have a Best & Naughtiest medal count. To be held in a Tattoo Parlour on Hindley Street in the early hours of the morning before a final.

Right to the end of Jimmy's reign in SA footy we could rely on whufc sticking in the boots!

In case you missed it, he again won the R O Shearman Medal as voted by the leagues 200 game plus club - 6 out of 6 plus, he again led the league in possessions - 6 out of 6 again.

Yep gets cheap easy kicks!

Reckon these guys have more of a clue than the umps.
How can the best player in the league be voted on by the umps who cant even get a basic holding the ball decision correct.
Reading through the votes today im sure the umps watch a differant game to most of us, Simon Phillips BOG against the Bays in Round 23
