LOL. Of course Boyd was just an innocent party.

Best and fairest is the criteria for the award.

Can't get over the fact there are Dogs fans who seem more interested in the ineligible player than the player from their club who just won...

He isn't a Dogs player I guess, and I don't think he is highly rated by some Dog supporters.

LOL. Thanks for proving my point.

He is a Dogs player and yes he is highly regarded. Him and Boyd have easily been our best players this year.

Congratulations to both Symes and Cross.

Doesn't mean squat IMO.

The notion that suspended = unfair player, and not suspended = fair player is why it's flawed.

Couldn't agree more, but I reckon thats a discussion for another time

True, but really, it isn't brought up any other time! :)

I felt sick seeing James poll in game after game.

It is very rare for something to happen like this. I remember seeing Corey McKernan miss out on the Brownlow and the Norwich Rising Star in different years, and Chris Grant missing out too. It seems the penalty is the "shame" that you can't win, and you get an asterisk against your name.

If Boyd won the Doggies Best and FAIREST, would that be accepted?

People have to get the stupid notion out of their head that being suspended means you can't be judged fair. It's crap.

Peter Darley got dudded one year for calling an Umpire ( Hall I think) "a bloody cheat".

Work that one out.

Personally dont think AFL listed players should be eligible.
As we keep getting reminded, they are not SANFL players anymore and an AFL club pays their wages

Symes and Cross didn't belt anyone behind play throughout the year. Boyd did. Therefore the best and fairest players won the medal tonight. There's always next year for Boyd....................

I disagree
Whilst I see the merit in the argument, I think it's better they stay in the voting, than be out of it.

Maybe they shouldn't receive premiership medals either

They are not allowed to represent the SANFL at state level but can win our highest award, cant have it both ways

Congratulations to both guys well deserved winners. Great speeches. I think in 2004? We had the Margarey and the ken farmer medalist (might have already been mentioned).

My two bobs worth is these medals should be for best. But anyway, great winners regardless.

So they shouldn't receive a premiership medal if they happen to play in a winning GF?

I think that's a fairly recent Gentlemen's agreement between state leagues rather than a rule like the "fairest and most brilliant" in Magarey/Brownlow. Tough luck on that one Boydy, no doubt worse things were done over the year and not caught out, but I expect not by the likes of Symes, Cross, Liddle, Schmidt. Not losing your temper is part of being brilliant too I reckon.

I can't support the argument that someone like Brad Symes shouldn't be able to win a Magarey playing for the Dogs. A guy who grew up in the Centrals' zone, who played juniors and seniors for Central long before he was recruited to either AFL side (Dogs enough for you TSG?). And another respondent said something like "well done for having a crack at SANFL level, unlike other AFL players", well that is why. He's Dogs first.

I offer my congratulations to both Brad Symes and Joel Cross. It's a shame I only had the opportunity to see Cross play twice this year, I don't know his work nearly well enough. Top effort over a full season, well done.
