Well, are we at all surprised by this? It seems that any time South make any sort of progress they hurt themselves with a rash decision, or treat important people badly (or both!). And even when they seem to be getting some stability they mess it all up.
What I want to know is how they could possibly judge Clay's coaching given the severe lack of cattle under him. And to make matters worse it sounds like they don't have someone better lined up. Surely with nobody else ready to step up, moving a guy who has yet to be shown up (IMHO) is very unwise.
This smacks of the South administration thinking there is a quick fix and they just neeed to keep changing things until it happens. We hear all the time south want to model themselves on centrals, well this isn't how centrals went about establishing themselves. The dogs went for respectability and stability first, then they looked at how they might go about winning finals. It was far from the joked about situation of signing the Gowans and then we just became good. There was a decade of hard work leading into that.
The saddest part of all this is who would want to coach them? They have little playing stocks, a board shown to be impatient and trigger happy, a culture that has made many people leave just to get out of the place and little hope of getting many recruits. What player would want to play for South as opposed to the other 8 SANFL clubs? Even players in south's zone wouldn't be itching to leave their local clubs. If south were seen as hard working, determined and loyal then perhaps people might want to join them.
At the moment, sadly for all south supporters, they are simply a basket case. The longer this goes on, the harder it will be to establish the SANFL in the south, and the closer we get to an 8 team comp with no real representation in that zone. If they were a house you'd tear it down and rebuild. Should the SANFL be thinking about trying to do something similar?
