Agreed, but on that note there should also be something named after Chris and James Gowans - 18 Premierships between them, a world record for twins I would think!

Cheers

I woudnt be comparing the Gowans to the absolute legends of the competition over the years.

Im fairly sure one of them has said that its not right for his record to be compared to Geof Motley, who won his premierships when the competition was consideraby more prestigious than it is today.

Actually come to think of it, how prestigous was it pre the mid 1960's when there were not as many opponents to beat?

Gowans v Motley(s) = NO CONTEST

With respect to 'the twins' records, they aren't in the same 'Hemisphere'

Clubs regional zones brought players to the city. Country football offered no cash incentive to stay and play in the local area. Amatuer football was that, amatuer with no payments. Sure, SANFL league football was no cash cow for the players but it was THE most prestigious competition in the state so you could safely assume that the large majority of the best players in the state were playing SANFL.

Country footy has been paying cash for 50 years, by no means a recent thing

For sure, but I would imagine the money on offer in the 50/60's in the bush would have been less attractive than playing at the top level. Sure there would have been some who didn't come into the city, you would think that the bulk of top level players would have been in the SANFL though.

Interesting point.

That's the very same argument used by Victorians to disparage the abilities of the likes of McIntosh, Robran, Aish, etc. "they didn't come over to play in the "BIG LEAGUE"

Have to disagree with the sentiment here. There is no way that all the best footballers were playing League football. Imagine how many Mick Redden types would have been around say pre WW2 stretching back to the late 1800's. it simply would have been impossible for him to play League football which is what i am getting at.
Would the amount of guys hidden away in pockets in all over the state with above average ability been roughly equivalent to the amount of guys in the AFL system from our state?

Think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Certainly from anecdotal reports, up to and including the 50's there would have been many that felt they had to stay on the farm or happy to stay in their community. Society, lifestyle, technology and transport changes in the 50's and 60's mixed with the halcyon days of the SANFL, no doubt more were encouraged to give it a try.

Beeny, unbelievable, we agree.
If Robran, Ebert etc etc = Matthews, Skilton, Bourke etc etc
Then Gowan's = Motley

The challenges of work and distance for those that didn't play SANFL would have been the same for those in Victoria and WA with their respective leagues

Your kidding surely
Half these guys running around now would of been b graders in that era.
No one in the last 20 years would be fit to do up the bootlaces of someone like Motley.
