I have said all along that moving Sturt to Mt Barker is probably the only way they will survive.

Will mount barker take them, I would imagine a fair proportion of the town would already support an SANFL and be unlikely to change just because an established side moves there. Also would think alot would be AFL followers with little to no interest in the SANFL regardless

Very disapointing crowd for both clubs. Sturt needed fans to show up and support the club get back on their feet and Magpies fans need to get behind the club in what looks like a long year.

If this ground sharing continues into the future perhaps the SANFL might consider scheduling different away teams in consecutive weeks? Accepting of course that if the Magpies had rolled Norwood in round 1 then last nights crowd might have been significantly better.

Good on Sturt though for trying something different.

Crowds will get less at night games as the weather gets cooler, so right now is the time for SANFL sides to make some hay whilst the sun shines, big crowds now balance out smaller crowds later on in the season.

Clearly this is obvious, yet would Sturt have not been better served in terms of crowd numbers to have played Norwood last night? Perhaps that is something for the club to think about as they debrief from last nights match. As before, a Home match against WWT at Thebarton would likely draw any SANFL club that does not have access to lights a reasonable gate and that is another option to look at.

Another option for Sturt to get some good numbers would be a match played at Uraidla Oval in the hills preceded by a Football Carnival of the various schools in the Adelaide HIlls, that would likely get a number of young families in and be a good opportunity to get new people interested in the club.

I fear the issue here is the old chestnut of Sturt leaving Unley Oval and people vigorously opposing it, because they want Sturt to stay at Unley Oval and perhaps would rather see the club fold than any traditions be changed?

What people should understand is that the SANFL and its clubs should be encouraged to create new traditions, we certainly used to and we have had different sides competing and a wide range of venues were clubs have played in the past. I for one was not wrapped up in giving up the dream of South Adelaide developing Panther Park at St Marys and moving down South, but I supported in and its set the club up for life. Maybe some Sturt members need to realize that the Sturt FC and the great club that it is, is much bigger than just its history at Unley Oval and that its about being double blue and being Sturt irrespective of where you go into battle.

Why would Sturt supporters want to have home games at Glenelg when they have a night facility right next door ?
If they wont travel to Norwood they wont travel to Glenelg surely.
As to Sturt fans hating Norwood I am sure they do , just as we hate them but that has nothing to do with it. The Norwood Football Club agreed to allowing Sturt to use Coopers stadium to help football in general and more specifically assist Sturt to generate additional income in difficult times. As much as Norwood and Sturt hate each other it would be a disaster to see Sturt ( or any club ) fold.

Too late now, but another (small) reason why the SANFL should have been pushing to keep Adelaide Oval as a medium-sized ground and build another stadium in the western end.

Exactly, I made the point last night that there didnt appear many Magpie supporters their last night.
Perhaps they have jumped on big brothers bandwagon after their success in Round 1

Good question, I don't know to be honest .. Is it a flat fee, a percentage of gate, percentage of food & bev sales, combination of some or all?

I don't know, all I was told was that (without trying to blow our own trumpet) it was a pretty generous deal, and that the Sturt footy club matters to our hierarchy.

I think Mt Barker has a population of about 10,000. When I was last in Adelaide we checked it out as I'm interested in settling there. Saw 2 people in Sturt colours while there, didn't see any other SANFL representation.
While I'd like to see Sturt in Mt Barker I think it isn't big enough yet, 10,000 population means we need 1 in 10 to turn up just to get a local turn out of 1,000, everyone else would have to come up the freeway through one entrance.
Maybe people would turn up from surrounding areas but I also think that 1 in 10 is unrealistic given that SA wide less than 1 in 20 attend AFL. So until the government improve infrastructure, build a new highway entrance and upgrade the train line to Mt Barker, then the information I have suggests a move to Mt Barker could be the end of SFC.
Unless we get a sweet deal like South got. If I remember right, the government originally developed the oval for them and they moved in free of charge? Just asking, so I might be wrong on that, but is that what happened?

I haven't attended a SANFL game in many years so pleae excuse my ignorant question but could this match have been played at Richmond? I reckon they might have got more Porties out to Richmond than a second trip to Norwood in as many weeks. Also, if Sturt and West are in that much bother could this be the next merger in the SANFL? I know that Richmond and Clarence Park merged in the Turf Cricket but obviously there would be more emotion involved in a proposed SANFL merger.

Surely it's better than getting soaked up by the Cows.

There was plenty of Black and White at the Parade last week but last night 5 of us went with a few staying away because they couldn't afford two Port Adelaide games on the same weekend. Fair enough I say.

As bad as we were in virtually every aspect of the first half, when they finally got it together the Magpies looked very dangerous. That Sturt were tiring was brought up to the players at the 3/4 time break. If Port Adelaide are fitter than the Double Blues that's our good fortune.

It's amazing what can be achieved when you both kick long and kick goals!

That said, I hope the result burns because we didn't deserve to win.

I was actually wondering if the 8 day break vs the 6 day break had any impact on the result? Sure, it could've been fitness also, but all things else being equal, the team with the 8 day break would be expected to finish the stronger.
