Big difference is, future generations won't grow up on the SANFL like we all did.

I look at my my nephews and nieces and my mates' kids and they all love their footy but couldn't give a stuff about the local league.

Even though some of their parents are die-hard SANFL fans and take them to games...

For sure, and that has to be the SANFL's job to re-image itself and make the competition more appealing for the younger generation(s) .. They've lived off the loyalty of supporters for too long.

Entertainment dollar & choices is another big factor.

Perhaps even more of a threat than the AFL...

Ridiculous for footballers in district, amateur or country football teams to get paid more than League footballers. If their worth that much, why aren't they playing League? Granted not all D, A or C footballers get paid more or similar to League players but I'm sure there would be many who do.

ABC televised games must continue. Its not just metro area people who watch the telecasts. People throughout Australia watch the telecasts. Not every body can watch the live steams. Telecasts promote the SANFL competition and people who aren't in a position to be at the games would apreciate the opportunity to watch the telecasts. If you're going to stop the TV broadcasts, why not stop the radio broadcasts as well, same arguement.

Your kidding, a salary cap? It's just been abolished cos it can't be policed.
I think there should be no SANFL Saturday arvo games, why schedule them then when your potential crowds are playing in ammos etc

Disagree with number 3.
Most country and amatuer leagues play 15-18 games, so I don't see why 20 is too many. However the commitment required needs to be looked at. Give the players another three weeks off and start pre-season in early December, maybe 4-5 times at the club a week rather than 5-6 during the season. It may seem like a "dumbing down" of the competition, but I think this would help with the drop-off of players.

We have had a bad year with crowds as have the AFL, but haven't we had a decade of consistent, slightly increasing crowds. Taking into account we have had a global financial crisis which is now lingering and starting to burn, I dont know why there is so much doom and gloom in respect to the SANFL. McDermott usually writes an article a year like this, maybe they have handed the baton to Jars. You cant disagree on his analysis of the defensive game plan, but lets hope North get the job done on West Sunday and then allow a free moving GF because the Legs can score well when the game does not go ultradefensive.

Will be interesting to see where the league stands ten, twenty years from now...

I think you're right.
I've heard a couple of jokes regarding the age of patrons in the H J Mackay stand at Unley. Sadly, in 10 to 20 years time they will be the same jokes told about SANFL crowds in general. The bulk of us our here because we remember it in all its glory. We bonded with our clubs amid fever pitched capacity crowds and relived it all again in the 8 page spread of the Sunday Mail.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Oh well, now the AFL has finished for the year, the local rag might do more than a half page report on the SANFL this week.

Spot on JK, that's why I think they should drop prices to get in! If anyone thinks the money made through the gate is significant well their kidding themselves. Quantity is what you want; then a coke and crunchie bought at the game has made $ back for the home club!
$5 to get in and kids free so it's a huge point of difference verses the AFL . Go after the kids, but it's the parents who's wallets are needed inside the grounds so you have to make it an easy decision financially to all come to games and regularly.

It is unfortunate that a week after an exciting AFL Grand Final all attention will be turned to the SANFL and the likelihood of the most boring GF ever played.

The only supporters who consider that the GF is going to be boring are the ones who's team are playing in the GF :p

Agree with a lot of Jars opinion piece  in addy on 27/9 except for him wanting 8teams Inc magpies whereas I believe in 10 teams with crow and power ressies

1st  premise keeping Magpies alive
2nd premise put all bias aside supporters. we can all have our 2000 game day diehards
3rd premise  heirarchy of sanfl & clubs to realise they need afl more  than afl need them
4th premise you want a strong vibrant exciting sanfl comp that can draw crowds

From 2014

All Power  players align to Magpies
All Crows players align to Crows
Crows 9  games at opponents home ground with gate and  profits to  opponent
Crows 9 home games at Adelaidei  with gate and profits to assist funding their operations
Magpies   9 away at opponents home ground with gate and profits to opponent
Magpies  9 home games   at Alberton   or Adelaide Oval  with gate and profits to Assist funding their operations

Played   on alternate day or night to the afl  team

Side  made up of squad members  and a rookie base from under 18 and guests if needed

The two  afl sides play for points and their win loss ratio would be up and down according to availability especially if down on key positions. Yes  they would dominate at times and you would expect them to be finalists. In first year or two would be hard to beat but the other eight sides would and should aspire to improve. Lets face it this years final standard has been poor as have crowds. and at  least if these teams made finals their supporter base would follow them whether their afl side was alive or not

As a North  supporter/ member I would expect if we played Crows  at Prospect you could and should draw a crowd   of at least of at least 4000 and am being conservative. Dads mums and kids would  ahave access to huddles for the thrill and you never hear any tactics or secrets anyway. kick and catch at will , autographs and presentations in opponents clubrooms and I gtee rooms would be bubbling from five til seven . If it's Magpies and they are  travelling ok then their crowds would come too.    i wouldn't allow them to be the tv game  10 team comp gives you 18 rounds playing everyone twice, have state game or two and have grand final the week before the afl grand final week. gee you could even have a complete week off one week

As an afl season ticket holder I thoroughly enjoy watching the young afl players  from Crows and would still take interest in them against us and others. and they will develop far quicker with their peers and coaches.  The two clubs must commit to finals rather than the poor way the local clubs are currently treated in September.  If  their afl team is in finals intensity it gives every one of their players the chance to participate in finals campaign with a classical example the year with Sturt with Glenelg,South in limbo

Ps anyone under 25 should get concession prices as they are spectators of the future
I'm 50  but  kids who turn who turns 18 suddenly goes from paying  nothing to full price  unless availing of a concession . Not Sure how much you charge adults over 25 but agree with Jars that the current admission is over priced and there should be the
possibility of season tickets or promotions on Port or Crows part being on offer as the local clubs do

PS2 Regardless of the above , the crowds at sanfl finals should be sending alarm bells to the sanfl that they can not sit back and believe that the competition would be better of without the 30 afl listed players who need to kept in the system for betterment of the comp even allowing for the Power attitude towards sanfl finals

Crows only got 31k to their last do or die final with Freemantle after what you could only describe as blanket media coverage. AFL crowds, like SANFL crowds are down this year by the same proportion. Port Power is on a life support and at risk of flatlining. Who is in trouble?

Your propositions would counter your 4th premise. With no integrity left in the competition, who besides Crows and Port Power supporters wanting to check out their "young afl players" would go.

Crows and Power reserves must play in a national AFL/VFL reserves competition in other words P%#@ OFF my other suggestion to increase crowd numbers is to possibly start the SANFL footy season 2-4 weeks earlier and as the weather will be warmer all games will be night games the SANFL Grand Final will therefore be 2-4 weeks before the AFL GF most of us know that after the AFL GRAND FINAL FOOTY DOES NOT EXIST.
SANFL 2000 - 2011 Central District 12 consecutive Grand Final appearances and 9 Premierships.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFF.

Hit em hard let them get up and hit em again.
