A lot of the problem stems from recruiting, so many wasted picks, not necessarily in last 3 or 4 years, but 6 or 7 years before that.

They just dont seemed to have developed any players over the last few years. It is still the older players carrying the team. The day Alan Stewart left the club was the day the Power started their downward spiral. Stewart is one of the most under rated people in football.

Actually Stewart is a significant factor in the condition of the current list. His recruiting record is extremely over-rated and he left the club with an above-average amount of duds - Thomson, Willits etc etc.

Its players from his era who should be entering their prime, but there's hardly any about now

Wow, had not seen or heard that point of view before. Surely what he brought to the club was far better than what has been recruited since. I thought he was instrumental in your 2004 - 2007 era of two grand final appearances.

He was, but 2006-7 rookies who were drafted should now be 100+ game players entering the best football of their lives.

Just looking for that now, might have been earlier than I thought, perhaps as far back as 2003..?

SANFL thread I know, but this is where the Power stuffed up trying to hold on too long. If 2006-08 were there pain years, they would have got good draft picks then, and combined with players such as Brogan and Cornes would have provided leadership as well as still having a little bit of good footy in them. West Coast have it worked out, if you're not at the top, you need to be at the bottom, and by making the fall quickly, Cox, Kerr, Embley, Glass all have good footy in them when the youngsters come through. Being "honourable" like the Crows and Power have been over the last decade gets you nowhere.

Exactly right, look it again this season the Power are a decade away from a premiership and the Crows once again look like their about the 4th to 8th best side but no serious premiership threat as they were for most of this millenium so far.

Not sure recruiting officers have much to do with effort on the field, but a coach certainly does.

I dont care if you are draft pick no. 1 or 2000 100% effort levels should be identical.

Has there ever been a ruckman who has gone on to be a successful coach?

Wrong GWW due to A Stewarts recruitment the Power won a Premiership in 2004 and played in another Grand Final in 2007 the problem is the recruitment and coaching staff and also its really NOT Port any more its just another useless AFL/VFL club.
SANFL 2000 - 2011 Central District 12 consecutive Grand Final appearances and 9 Premierships.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFF.

Hit em hard let them get up and hit em again.

This is a very fair and pertinent point .. A club's cattle might lack the class of their opposition and be more prone to mistakes, but intensity and honesty of effort should be expected from the best player in the competition, the worst player in the competition and everyone within that range.

Do we really think paid proffesional athletes dont give an effort though! I would be very surprised if there were many footballers who could get to a contest and think 'nah cant be stuffed getting to that one' with all the scrutiny cameras etc etc players just cant get away with it.

Could it be with all the rotations, the speed of the game, tactics etc that these days in football you get more contests where one players is fresher compared to the opponent who is out on his legs and about to be rotated. Not to often you see one player follow another player around all day everywhere he goes including the bench.

For sure rotations and conditioning can play a part, but intensity is a players responsibility IMHO .. As I said before IMHO there's a raft of issues at Alberton, and the responsibility for these issues falls at all their feet. Coaches, Players, Admin.

Knowing the level of motivation Primus has within, I am certain the playing group would get the "rev up" they require before a game, but to be honest, would an AFL player need any extra motivation than pride in their own performance?

The first 5 games gave me some hope that we had turned the effort/attitude/intensity corner for the better, yesterday managed to undo 5 weeks of work in 30 minutes.
