Saw my first Sturt game since Westies at Unley many years ago on Saturday. It was great to see a few of the old faces, and they don't seem to have changed so much in all the years that have past.
Also sad to hear of one that has passed on in that time: R.I.P, Neil, I'll remember you best for all the good times we had in Keane's last year.
Entertaining game of footy. I wasn't expecting a win, but we almost came out with one. It really came down to the last half minute with a contested ball on the outer wing. One of the Sturt blokes had the ball, and then lost it somehow through the pressure being applied. North then took it straight down to their end without any of our blokes touching it and put it through on the run right on the siren for a two goal win.
Had the Sturt bloke (excuse the vagueness, it was too far to see from where I was sitting and I followed the ball once he'd lost it) managed to elude the North hands, and gotten the ball on to the team mates in the clear then we may well have stolen a draw.
Nice sort of crowd, at a guess between 2,500 and 3,000 but I haven't had much experience estimating crowds at Unley in these past 11 years, so I could be well off. Especially liked the devoted on the hill trying to get a North chant happening, and of course it was good to see the colour of the Sturt Cheer Squad. It would be fantastic if the SANFL were to return to the 7,000+ average crowds of yester-year but the heart beats strong in the numbers that still remain.
Back to Japan in a few more days...
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
