What about Crouch, guaranteed to have him in your side for the whole season as well?

We don't have many ruckmen and he should spend time in the SANFL. Tough choice but we have a few of crouchs type

BUt Central didn't 'lose' them either because they were picked up by the Crows so stayed in SA, much like Luke Brown and Mitch Grigg will be staying in SA wit Norwood.

I don't have a problem with the way the mini-draft works. It gives the lower ranked teams first dibs on the best of interstate draftees coming to SA and it's a fair system.

Yeah, I thought about that as well but Kurtze is a quality ruckman and I guess you'd hope for big improvements from talented youngsters Tom Pinyon and Mitch Curnow.

I guess it is a calculated decision and has to be weighed up against the quality of the player, the need of the SANFL club and the potential of how much AFL the lad could play.

Disallowing players to head to a certain club, or forcing them to a particular club, is manipulating the system I think. It's an interesting point you raise SDK, but the current system, as any would, will be a case of "swings and roundabouts" and all clubs are aware of the rules, so it's the same for all.

Regardless of which SANFL club you support I believe the interests of the young player is paramount and he should be given every possible chance to develop into an AFL player given that is his chosen PROFESSION !
The correct SANFL club for that particular player is a major factor in whether that young player develops his full potential.

Unworkable, I'd suggest.

Who decides which club gets a particular player? The AFL Club?

That subverts the SANFL competition and is self-perpetuating.

Who is to say which club will be better for a draftee? General perception?

Hard but not unworkable ! Some form of points system based on suitability to requirements.

That maybe easier.

Surely Sturt would go with Crouch? Guaranteed full year playing with the club and by the look of things would step straight into a midfield spot with any team in the comp.

Designed to give a leg-up to sub-average Victorian clubs which would not be competitive in a competition which either A) was open slather, or B) aligned the talent in each state with the clubs in the that same state.

To support the AFL is to accept this practice.

Its actually the opposite these days, a larger percentage of Victorians are drafted than there are a percentage of AFL clubs in Victoria.
If talent these days was aligned by state the Qld sides, the SA sides and NSW sides would be down the bottom every year.
Geelong for example would be even stronger if they had exclusivity to players in their area and the Crows and Port would be a lot worse. That's a scary (but good) thought.

That's already happening. Port Adelaide are not allowed to pick a Crows recruit in the mini-draft. No other SANFL club has that restriction.

Yep, Im not sure I'd be thrilled with that if I was a Magpies fan .. From memory it was a condition of the "one club" situation? (Not saying it's right or wrong, just trying to remember how/when it came about)

So, say there were only AFC drafted players when Ports pick came about, they'd have to pass?

Ludicrous, and a disgrace!

No other club is bankrolled by an AFL club either. It's a crap situation from all sides.

It was an AFC/SANFL condition of the merger.

Pretty sure it could have been done better. Perhaps something like giving Port the option to Trade their selection to another club for a Port AFL listed player/pick?

It's a tough call that is for sure. Def pros for both players. But I hear the ruckman may win out. Time will tell.

The correct SANFL club for that particular player is a major factor in whether that young player develops his full potential.

And if the draftees club isn't right for the his development the AFL club will make sure a transfer between SANFL clubs is made.
Just off the top of my head Jacob Surjan from Centrals to PAM.

Yes, Matt Lobbe from Magpies to West, then to AFL.
