So which West Adelaide team turned up to play at Richmond Oval today? Was it the team that out-muscled North 2 weeks ago at Prospect or the one that surrended so meekly to Sturt at Unley last week? Sadly, it was the latter, except that today’s performance was even more inept than last week!
Westies supporters were left stunned by the disgraceful performance of their team today and the only reason they didn’t leave in droves at 3Q time (when the game was all but over) was the fact they would be compared with Crows fans – and no-one wants that!
The day didn’t start well. Ferguson pulled out and we didn’t get either Schmidt or Pettigrew, AFL discards for this week. In a bizarre twist the Power took Lobbe, who was called up to fill behind the injured Brogan, after being dropped to Westies seconds. Homburg came in for his first game of the year and Jack Carter for his first game. The trend started early when Anderson had 3 opportunities to goal in the first few minutes and fumbled every one. We were held goal-less this Q and were kept in the game by Port being wasteful in front of goal. 1Q PA 3.5, WA 0.2.
The second was more of the same, 2 ordinary teams going sideways and backwards but Westies scrambled 5 goals including a couple of gems from Ryan Willets and a great snap from the pack by Caruso. Half time PA 6.8, WA 5.5 and the game was pretty evenly balanced at the long break.
The premiership Q saw Port play some wonderful team footy to pile on 8 goals against a hapless Bloods who could only manage 2 pts. At this point we had failed to kick a goal in 2 of the 3 Qs of the game. We were being smashed in the midfield, continuously worked the ball to the flanks and pockets and our skills were deplorable. We couldn’t pick up a loose ball and were run over by a keener, faster and more skilful Magpies unit. Westies did what they always do in such circumstances, they flooded, which meant they gave up any chance to score. 3Q PA 14.11, WA 5.7.
In the first 6 minutes of the last Q Westies controlled the ball and looked as though they would regain some pride from the game. But such is their lack of forward system and their inability to take a grab inside 50 they failed to score a goal. Port then took control and kicked 3 goals in 3 minutes as if to show us how it is done. We scored a goal at the 16 min mark, our first for about 45 minutes of footy. At one stage Port had kicked about 11 goals straight without a reply from Westies. Final score PA 18.11, WA 7.11 To add to our woes Willets injured his ankle and was assisted from the ground with, what looks like, a bad injury.
Morris was best. He roamed far and wide for his kicks and ended up forward but who knows where players are supposed to be these days. (So who WAS on Brett Ebert?) Beech and Macreadie were probably the only others who did anything. Beech can take a grab, is a good kick and has that touch of class. Homburg did a few nice things Fort Caruso twice ran into an open goal to miss from point blank range.
What do you do after 2 such dreadful performances? You can’t drop all the players who deserve it, you wouldn’t have many left. We must regroup and work on, what must be badly dented confidence. Since beating the Bays in rd 7 we have won one of 5 games. We have the Bays next Sunday, then the bye then Centrals, Eagles, North and Norwood. After starting so well we are now staring into a black hole.
