I don't want to get in trouble as I am an u18s timekeeper, but in the last few years the junior umpires are watching to much AFL and copying what the AFL umpires do a little too much, that's just from where I sit each week.

I think it would be more based on what the umpires boss are instructing them to do and as mentioned with the link I provided earlier, the SANFL this year has introduced 4 changes to interpretations of current rules that tie in more with the AFL ruling.

I was interested when I first read the topic title but disappointed when I noticed the "f" in "Shift".

A few weeks ago I sent an email to Patrick Willis (SANFL website) stating a few problems I was having with various aspects of umpiring, and asking for clarification of how they are interpreting certain rules.

He said he was sending my email to Shane Harris. That was over 3 weeks ago, and I've got no response. So that's my problem with umpiring, they feel as though they don't have explain themselves or answer to anyone.

Shane Harris, as usual ... thanks for nothing.

5AA made mention tonight that they were hoping to get Shane on their show tomorrow night. Maybe send your questions in through AA and they might get answered.

Do any of your questions get answered in the link provided above notifying the change in interpretations of a few rules for season 2011?

Otherwise, Shane is usually a pretty approachable guy, maybe have a chat to him in person when you see him at a game next?

to improve the standard of umpiring quickly you should do two things.......................................get rid of tony dey & michael avon in that order

Since i started following people have mostly whinged about umpires, more easy to sit back now being a neutral supporter. The amount of mistakes now by players has increased dramatically due to pace of the game and also the way the game is played so differently compared to the past.Umpires are told now where to stand to adjudicate decisions,i gather even their style has become more complicated.Dont know Shane Harris but i would think part of his job would be to train the younger umpires to a future with the AFL.

I don't think we need to get rid of umpires, it's simpler than that. They just have to take out the soft interpretations.

Why would or should he respond to Joe Blow from the public? ... they're accountable to the SANFL and the clubs.
