Quite the opposite actually, it's really a cbf year as far as the SANFL is concerned IMO, especially with matches like these.

Not the best spectacle but still better than the election :o

Ferguson and F. Caruso withdrew and I believe the seconds were two players short until chubb arrived during the seconds clash.
Cloke did not front for the maggies.

Makes Rd 22 very interesting - not often the sanfl comes down to the wire this late in the season for 5th spot.

That scoreline was literally unbelievable. I'd just assumed the SANFL live scores thingy had stuffed up and frozen on the quarter time score, even though it said 'full time'.

Now that we won, I can happily say that there are major issues with the umpiring at West games.

Shellacked by them again tonight.

If we'd lost, it could have got ugly, unfortunately.

I did say, you can't have Eagles and West in the finals series together. ;)

Do you imagine there is some law that says the free kick count should be equal?

Or that teams have a quota of free kicks to be allocated?

It amazes me how people villify Richard Williams. I once heard supporters of both sides accusing him of bias against their team. I think it is just that he is the only one some halfwits can recognise.

There were 2 football matches played in Adelaide tonight with a 3-2 scoreline. One was at Hindmarsh Stadium and the other at Richmond Oval. One was won by the Adelaide Reds, the other by West Adelaide.

In dreadful conditions the Bloods beat a determined Port, 3.4 to 2.4. The oval was a combination of mud and/or sheets of water after several downpours late afternoon and the contest was more like rugby with a giant scrum moving slowly up and down the field.

Westies lost Ferguson with back spasms before the game but Davenport dropped back from the Power. Fort Caruso didn’t play. 18yo Nick Homburg played his first game and it was wonderful to see Logan Hill playing senior footy again after 2 yrs out with a broken leg. The first Q saw Westies make the most of their forward entries with Nat Caruso leading the way. He kicked our first goal and the clever Davenport the second and we went into the first break leading 2.1 to zero.

Port didn’t trouble the scorer until the 8 minute mark of the 2ndQ but they worked their way back into the game holding the ball in their forward line for most of the Q, scoring their first major at the 16 min mark. When the ball occasionally drifted forward the Port defence were always in front of their opposition and we went scoreless to half time but still in front 2.1 to 1.2.

The 3rdQ was an arm wrestle with Port playing much better wet weather footy but unable to score against some terrific West defence. Caire, Fisher and Green did some tough work in the face of a determined young Port team and their secret weapon, umpire Frank Manic-As. He must have given Port around ten frees deep in their defence this Q denying us scoring chances. 3Q WA 2.4, PA 1.4.

The last saw an early Port goal to Beard which had scores locked at 2.4 apiece for much of the Q. The game consisted of a sequence of scrum – ball-up – scrum with all players congregating around the ball. You easily could have played a game of mini-league in the other half of the oval. Westies probably had more of the play this Q and were the more desperate at the ball and when Hartlett flew into the ruck and punched the ball to Greg Rowe who snapped truly we went a goal clear with only minutes to go and were able to scramble a win. Déjà vu for Port as we won at Alberton mid season with a late snap in another tight contest.

Umpires Williams and Fila applied a commonsense approach in the conditions but umpire Manic-As was able to pluck frees from packs and ruck contests on a regular basis.

The scoreline was one for the statisticians. The lowest winning score since 1919, the second lowest ever, the lowest at Richmond, the lowest aggregate score at Richmond, etc.

Port had 219 possessions to our 202, they also won the clearances 34 to 29. West were lucky to win considering their offensive efforts were so ordinary but their endeavour and defensive efforts could not be questioned. In such conditions front position is imperative and our forwards played from behind most of the game. We also tended to go short too often whereas a long kick will always create more chances. Put simply, we didn’t help ourselves by failing to fully adapt to the conditions but our experience and toughness got us over the line. Best were Caruso, Caire, Green, Ezard Scott Blesing and Rowe.

For the second week in a row we could only manage 3 gls. The 2s lost 4.3 to 2.4
