A glance at the final score of this match would suggest a reasonably tight contest: CD 10.6, WA 6.7.. Not so. Westies were comprehensively outplayed all day by a tougher, faster and more skilled team.
The day was fine and cool and conditions were excellent. Westies played Steven Morris, rucked Ryan Willets and left out S Blesing and S Munn.
The first Q was tough and tight. Both teams searching for clear ground. Scores were locked at 1.1 apiece at the end of this scrappy stanza. Westies cracked early in the second Q. Their game unraveled into a stream of mistakes as they lapsed into what could simply be described as ‘dumb’ footy. Silly free kicks, clumsy tackles, appalling turnovers, kicking out of bounds on the full, dreadful mistakes all let the Dogs in for a 5 gl Q against a scoreless Bloods outfit. Half time: CD 6.2, WA 1.1
The third was an uninspiring affair until Westies kicked their second goal at the 15 min mark after a wonderful mark from Nat Caruso. For a few fleeting minutes Westies played some great footy and looked a chance to claw their way back into the game but a late Centrals goal had the 3Q time score CD 7.4 to WA 2.6. Reflect for a moment on the fact that in 3 Qs of footy Westies had kicked a paltry 2 goals.
The last Q saw Westies show some fight and boot 4 but at this point Centrals were cruising and they added 3 to maintain a comfortable buffer. The game was of little interest to anyone at this point.
There is no big secret to Centrals game. They use the kick more than the handball (202 kicks, 107 HBs), they tackle hard and they employ the corridor to goal. Westies overdo the handball especially moving the ball from defence, they maximize numbers at the ball, they move sideways and backwards and when they do get the ball into their fwd line there is hardly anyone there and as a result the ball rebounds at a frightening speed. Centrals were far more skilful and had clear arial supremacy taking 97 marks to Westies 64.
Beech kicked 2 gls in the last Q and Nat and Fort Caruso also got 2 apiece. Bennett had 2 set shots from 30 mtrs out for 2 points. It is a thankless job being FF at Richmond but he continues to underperform and has had a very disappointing season.. Best for Westies were Piasente, Ezard, the 2 Carusos, Silvester, Thompson and Birss. Schmidt got plenty of the ball but lets himself down with poor disposal. Webb looked slow and disinterested but was better when he went into ruck. Willets must surely go back to the 2s after looking outclassed. Morris ran out the game well although he was cramping late. There are a brace of players that really do struggle at this level: Champion, Fielke, Willets, Bennett. Another group just above them that are honest triers: Thompson, Rowe, Caire, Davies, Anderson. Most of these would struggle to make another league team. Time for some young blood.
The only good news was an amazing come from behind win by the 2s. Half way thru the 3Q they had only kicked 2 gls and were 5 down. They won 9.10 to 8.12. 2 Centrals players were reported in the last Q. Bornholm, Homburg and Harding deserve a chance at the next level.
